Nomination papers are available!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier announced today that nomination
papers are now available in her office for the Annual Town Election
scheduled to be held May 11th, 2019.

“Election Day is set for May 11th and signed nomination papers are due
March 22nd, 2019. Given the abolishment of the Board of Public Works last
year, there are only nine open seats, which is a relatively light election
year,” said Harder-Bernier.

On the ballot this spring will be elections for one member of the Board of
Selectmen for a three year term, one member of the School Committee for a
three year term, two members of the Board of Assessors – one member for a
three year term and one member for a two year term, one member of the
Planning Board for a five year term, one Board of Health member for a three
year term, one Trustee of the Public Library for a three year term, one
Town Clerk for a three year term, and one Moderator for a one year term.

Interested residents are encouraged to contact the Town Clerk’s Office,
any of the related departments, or sitting members of the board or
committee they are interested in becoming a part of in order to gain more
information about an open position.

To run for office, candidates only need to obtain 50 signatures of
registered Hanover voters in order to be placed on the ballot. Candidates
for office have until Friday, March 22nd to submit the signed nomination
papers to the Registrar’s Office for signature certification. Attached
please find the Spring Election Calendar for more information.

For more information about the election process and related deadlines,
please contact Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier or Assistant
Town Clerk Meg Pallotta at (781) 826-5000 x1079 or by e-mail at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or meg.pallotta@hanover-ma.gov .

“Singing with Parkinson’s” chorus

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The South Shore Conservatory (SSC) announces the creation of “Singing with
Parkinson’s”, a chorus designed for individuals living with Parkinson’s
disease and their care partners. This new chorus, a partnership between
SSC and the South Shore YMCA, is supported by a grant from the American
Parkinson Disease Association, MA Chapter. Sessions are held at the Laura
Center for the Arts, South Shore YMCA, 97 Mill Street.

“SSC is excited to partner with the South Shore YMCA to bring the first
specialized chorus of this type on the South Shore,” said Kathy Czerny,
SSC President. “For years, we have witnessed the power music has to
touch all populations, and we hope this weekly musical interlude serves to
brighten the lives of all who participate.”

SSC proposed the Parkinson’s chorus to provide multiple therapeutic
benefits. Research shows that those participating in organized music
groups experience a sense of belonging. This is especially meaningful to
those dealing with a progressive disease, which can be isolating.
Neurologically, music affects the brain and muscles in a way that allows
individuals to use their voice and move their bodies more effectively and
powerfully. In addition, the structure of music and its ability to
re-circuit in our brains when areas shut down, provides opportunity for
individuals living with Parkinson’s to address multiple symptoms in a fun
and social way. Singing in a chorus provides patterns, practice habits,
and social engagement, designed to maintain not just skills, but quality of
life.

No musical experience is necessary to participate. The chorus is directed
by board certified music therapists highly skilled in adaptation and
accommodation, and meets Wednesdays from 1-2:30 pm. The group will perform
music from a variety of genres and time periods. Singers will have the
opportunity to help choose the repertoire. Every rehearsal ends with time
to gather and socialize over refreshments.

“The South Shore YMCA is excited to be collaborating with the South Shore
Conservatory on this project. We are thrilled to expand programming around
inclusion and medical wellness. These are two primary areas of focus for
our organization and a great need in the South Shore. Being able to
collaborate with the South Shore Conservatory is a great way to be able to
expand our reach together and promote both organizations missions and
expand programs and services around these needs. We look forward to
developing the chorus for individuals with Parkinson’s with SSC, and see
other opportunities to collaborate more in the future” said Dan Berry,
Executive Director, South Shore YMCA-Emilson Branch.

In keeping with SSC’s mission to provide access, there is no cost to
participate in the Singing With Parkinson’s chorus. The Laura Center for
the Arts is fully accessible. To register, contact Eve Montague at
e.montague@sscmusic.org or 781-934-2731 x20.

Happy 90th Birthday Hanover VNA!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Please join me in congratulating the Hanover Visiting Nurse Association on
their 90th Birthday, Tuesday, January 15th, 2019! Below please find a
fabulous piece about their history in Hanover, and as written by Josephine
Koelsch, Hanover Visiting Nurse Board President, for the occasion.

“Beginning…
On January 15, 1929, proposed by Mrs. Harriet Latham and supported by the
Town of Hanover Selectmen, the Visiting Nurses Association was organized.
The objectives were expressed as follows: “To promote health, individual
and community, to prevent disease and to provide adequate nursing care for
the sick in their homes.”

Within the town, the achievements of the Association have been extensive.
For many years, (1929-1960), it raised funds to supply milk for school
children and at times, provide lunch. The VNA ran a Well Child
Conference, a dental clinic in the schools, as well as diphtheria, tonsil
and glaucoma clinics. It administered polio vaccine and TB tests. In
1960, classes were held to train baby sitters and teach the basics of home
nursing. The Association reached out to needy families, providing
Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets. However, one of the highlights during
this era occurred in 1946, when the Bigelow family established a
scholarship awarding money to girls who were planning a career in nursing.
Many memorial gifts and funds allowed for the VNA to grow and continue in
upholding its original objectives.

Evolving…
The Hanover VNA, in the 1990s continued providing medical and social
services to the townspeople, often in unison with other organizations such
as the Police and Fire Departments…67 years after its formation!
Home nursing visits were provided to all Medicare eligible patients,
monthly clinics were held for all at the VNA office, nursing scholarships
to high school students and camperships were provided for many youngsters.
In the late 1990s, the community VNAs planned to merge, but Hanover
declined an offer to be part of the newly formed conglomerate. In so
doing, the recipients of Hanover VNA home visits could no longer apply for
Medicare coverage. However, the Hanover VNA continued visitations at no
cost to the patients. This outreaching provided medical care and comfort
to all in need, and continued throughout the coming years and into the
present.

Continuing…
The Hanover VNA believes that all persons living in our community deserve
to be treated with dignity and respect. With this premise forming the
framework of our goals, the VNA Board members, in conjunction with the
Hanover Visiting Nurses work to promote the wellbeing of Hanover residents.
They continue the mission and projects set forth throughout the past
years, providing assistance where needed.
The VNA now gives out three scholarships to high school students pursuing
medical careers, the monetary amount for camperships far exceeds the amount
offered over the past years, and the holiday gifting continues to enrich
the lives of many families.
The Annual Open Meeting invites all Hanover residents to attend. The
programs offer insight into a variety of health issues and are well
attended.
The yearly fundraiser is the primary means of support for the VNA; your
generosity enables them to serve the community of Hanover.”

For more information about the Hanover VNA, please contact Jo Koelsch at
djkoelsch@verizon.net .
