Special Town Meeting results

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

In all of my 25 years in Hanover, I have never seen approximately (stay
tuned for the official count) 716 people vote unanimously for a debt
exclusion override vote…until Monday night. Even the high school vote in
2008 – with over 1100 voters – had two or three public naysayers at the
meeting.

This evening the Town of Hanover took the first step toward an addition to
the Center School – a more than two-thirds vote at the Special Town Meeting
held Monday, September 26th. And yes, in fact, it was unanimous.

The vote and the project are only halfway there, though. Next on the
docket – a vote at the polls on Saturday, October 1st, 2016. That’s this
Saturday. A majority of the town will decide one way or the other to
either build the addition, or not.

The polls are open from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Hanover High School,
located at 287 Cedar Street. See you there.

in 1632, guided Governor Winthrop across the river to get to Weymouth. The
group will head north along the rail bed next to the river where old hobo
markings may be seen, and return via the Hanson/Pembroke side of the Indian
Head River through Wildlands Trust Tucker Preserve.

The walk is approximately 4.5 miles round trip. Park at Luddam’s Ford Park

Special Town Meeting regarding the Center School Addition

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Some of you reading this e-mail have been waiting for this question to be
put back on a warrant for 14 years. Others of you are reading about this
project for the first time. Regardless of your perspective, this Monday’s
Special Town Meeting is an important milestone in our town’s legislative
history that deserves your attention today.

Most importantly, the Special Town Meeting will be held at Hanover High
School on Monday, September 26th beginning at 7:00 p.m. You are encouraged
to get there 15-30 minutes early so that parking will be easy and check-in
lines will move smoothly. Further, members of the HHS National Honor
Society and the HHS Student Council will be providing free childcare
beginning at 6:30 p.m. and lasting until the meeting is over for those who
need it. Meet them in the Media Center on the first floor of the high
school. Everyone – please get there in plenty of time and help us to avoid
check-in lines at 6:55 p.m.!

On the warrant is a brief “prior year bills” question, followed by the
long-awaited override question for the Center School addition project.
Here is the link to the warrant:
http://www.hanover-ma.gov/sites/hanoverma/files/file/file/2016_-_special_town_meeting_warrant_-_9-6-16_-_signed.pdf
. The Advisory Committee met Thursday night and their affirmative
recommendation on Article Two and related commentary is attached to this
e-mail.

Become an informed voter! There is quite a bit of information out there
that you can read or watch in order to become informed about the project.
Go to this section of the Hanover School’s website for more detailed
information: http://www.hanoverschools.org/future/ .

Additionally, there is a Municipal Ballot Question Committee that has been
formed recently and that is actively supporting the project. Their website
may be found here: http://www.yestohanoverschool.com/ . I am not
currently aware of an organized group advocating against the project, but
there has been some confusion regarding the “No on 2” Charter School signs
that are already up in anticipation of the November ballot question.

Remember that this is a two-part vote – first on Monday, September 26th,
followed by a vote at the polls on Saturday, October 1st. More details
about Saturday October 1st will follow in this space after Monday September
26th’s Special Town Meeting. See you there!

Survey regarding the color of Hanover’s Town Hall

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

When you look at a city or town hall, it is sure to say a lot about the
community’s values, culture, and history. Preserving town halls and
government buildings help maintain the structural integrity of the
community and the governance of a community. Hanover’s Town Hall was
built in 1863 where it sits today and was designed by the architect Luther
Briggs, Jr. and builder Samuel Nathan Turner.

Throughout its history the Hanover Town Hall has been altered to meet
Hanoverians’ needs and to keep up with the latest trends in architecture
and planning. One of the most eye catching changes has been the town
hall’s color. Originally, the building was painted brown, and then a
forest green.

The City Beautiful Movement developed in the 1890s and early 1900s as an
attempt to improve the quality of life which plagued both urban and rural
America. Hanover as well as many other suburbs transformed themselves in a
number of ways, including changing the color of their government buildings
to white. The white color represented purity and future prosperity.

The Hanover Town Hall has been repainted from brown, to green, to the white
color it is today, and it has not been altered despite the passing of this
movement. Currently, the Town Hall Restoration Task Force is focusing on
restoring and preserving the Hanover Town Hall and giving it a historically
appropriate color that would respect the town’s history and the community
as a whole while still being the centerpiece of Hanover’s civic fabric.
This fall, please take the opportunity to visit the online survey where you
can vote on what color best suits the Hanover Town Hall. Your opinions and
feedback will be immensely appreciated.
