Community Access and Media opening

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

It’s a great time at Hanover Community Television with a growing
collection of interesting shows, strong student involvement from HHS and
cool drone footage at big events like Hanover Day. The Community Access and
Media (CAM) committee has one opening for an energized resident who would
like to help out in making community television even better. If you are
interested in being appointed to this committee or just want to know more
about potentially getting involved, send an email to Town Moderator Doug
Thomson – moderator@hanover-ma.gov .

Free sunscreen dispensers at the ballfields

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I am always delighted to send out information about free services that
local businesses are providing to Hanover residents. Read on!

DPS Insurance Group (www.dpsinsurancegroup.com), an insurance agency
established in 2013 serving the residential and commercial insurance needs
of the region, has provided the Town of Hanover with twelve sunscreen
dispensers to be installed at the community’s six ballfields.

Daniel and Debbie Sullivan, principals at DPS Insurance Group, are Hanover
residents and opened their second location in the Town of Hanover in May
2016.

The sunscreen dispensers, which are valued at $5,000, have been installed
by the Town’s Recreation Department just as another busy season of
outdoor activities gets underway.

The agency has been a staunch advocate of the prevention of melanoma,
considered the most deadly form of skin cancer. “It’s about saving
lives, and about early detection and education,” said Debbie Sullivan,
Vice President of DPS Insurance. “There has been so much discussion about
the importance of preventing melanoma; this is a cause near and dear to us.
Melanoma touches the lives of so many people. And people can be their own
best advocates with education and adopting prevention measures, including
using sunscreen when outdoors.”

She said, “We are very pleased, as Hanover residents and as business
owners who are opening a second office in our hometown, to be able to work
with this community to take this step to help prevent the spread of
melanoma. We encourage everyone who uses our town’s recreational fields
to take advantage of this sunscreen that will be available. We also
encourage people everywhere to read up on melanoma and skin cancer and to
be proactive in fighting this threat.”

For more information, please contact Debbie at
debsullivan@dpsinsurancegroup.com .

Hanover’s Greatest Generation detailed just in time for Independence Day

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I just spent a thoroughly enjoyable half an hour watching a Hanover
Community Television video. The video features four of Hanover’s finest
citizens – Kenton Greene, Eleanor Kimball, Lorine Bergeron and John
Thomson. The four kindly detailed the history of and discussed some of the
names of the Hanover residents commemorated on the World War II boards that
have been restored and hung in Town Hall.

I heartily encourage you to take a moment this weekend as we celebrate our
country’s Independence Day to learn something about Hanover’s Greatest
Generation. The video may be found here:
https://vimeo.com/173067132?utm_source=email&utm_medium=vimeo-cliptranscode-201504&utm_campaign=28749
. My hat is off and tears are in my eyes as I contemplate their
contributions.

Thanks to Ken, Ellie, Lorine and Jack for the gift of their time and
recollections, too. This project is absolutely priceless!

Hanover Town Clerk selected to serve on MTCA Executive Board

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The week around the Fourth of July is always a slow news week…hence the
following e-blast. :)

At their recent state-wide Annual Meeting, the Massachusetts Town Clerks’
Association (MTCA) nominated and elected Hanover Town Clerk Catherine
Harder-Bernier to become a member of the MTCA Executive Board.

The MTCA Executive Board is charged with carrying out the mission of the
MTCA and has general charge and control of its affairs, funds and property.
The Executive Board has the authority to create policies and procedures
for officers and committees of the MTCA. The Board also supports the five
officers of the MTCA as they carry out the functions of the Association.
The Board consists of nine Town Clerks from across the Commonwealth.

“It is truly an honor to be selected to this important role in my
state’s professional organization”, said Harder-Bernier. “I had
expressed interest in a lesser role, the Legislative Committee, and when I
was asked to consider applying for a spot on the E-Board, I certainly did
not expect to be nominated. My short three years as a Town Clerk have been
extraordinary, however, so I must have caught someone’s attention! I
will be serving along with some of the brightest minds and distinguished
servants of this Commonwealth. I am simply flattered to be among them”,
remarked Harder-Bernier.

“The Massachusetts Town Clerks’ Association is thrilled to have Hanover
Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier join our Executive Board”, said
President Andrew Dowd. “Ms. Harder-Bernier joins a team of dedicated
volunteers who put in tremendous effort to ensure our members receive
first-rate educational opportunities and professional guidance. The Town
of Hanover is fortunate to have such a dedicated and well respected Town
Clerk”, continued Dowd.

Harder-Bernier was also recently re-elected to a second term as Hanover’s
Town Clerk, where she topped the ticket among all candidates.

Harder-Bernier was sworn in to her new MTCA Executive Board role at a
banquet held by the MTCA on June 16th. Her term of office will begin July
1st and will be for three years, and she will serve alongside President
Andrew Dowd, Town Clerk from Northborough, who was re-elected to a second
one year term at the same Annual Meeting, First Vice-President Jeremy
Gillis, Town Clerk from Easton, Second Vice-President Marie Ryan, Town
Clerk from Great Barrington, Treasurer Danielle Sicard, Town Clerk from
Walpole, Secretary Elizabeth Greendale, Town Clerk from Holliston,
Executive Board member Kelly McElreath, Town Clerk from Upton, and
Executive Board member Diane Packer, Town Clerk of Natick.

New Habitat Restore is now open!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

South Shore Habitat for Humanity proudly announces the grand opening of its
first Habitat ReStore located at 357 Columbia Road in Hanover – next to
the new Planet Fitness on the southern end of Route 53.

The SSHH ReStore is modeled after many other successful Habitat ReStores
around the country. ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and
donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories,
building materials and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail
price. Habitat ReStores use the funds raised to support the local mission.

“We build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter,”
stated Martine Taylor, Executive Director. “This store will enable us to
raise awareness about affordable housing, increase revenue, and engage more
volunteers in our mission.” Mark Anderson, the new ReStore Manager,
explained that, “every item donated and sold at the ReStore plays a vital
role in improving the lives of families in need of better housing, and at
the same time, we are doing our part to protect our environment,”
remarked Anderson.

The new Habitat Restore in Hanover is one of the more than 900 Habitat
ReStores located in the United States, Canada, Australia, South America,
New Zealand and Northern Ireland. In addition to the revenue generated for
its programs, ReStores help to protect the environment. In 2014, ReStore
donations diverted more than 128,000 tons of building materials from
landfills by giving reusable items a second life. To shop, donate, or
volunteer, visit www.sshabitat.org .

South Shore Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
dedicated to delivering simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership
with families in need. SSHH is based in Weymouth and serves 35 cities and
towns south and southwest of Boston. Founded in 1986 as an independent,
nonprofit organization, SSHH works in partnership with families,
volunteers, faith partners, and community and business leaders to help
local families living in inadequate housing move into simple, decent,
affordable homes of their own. Since its inception the organization has
built 55 homes and has provided housing for more than 96 adults and 192
children. Today, South Shore Habitat homes are located in Abington,
Braintree, Brockton, Cohasset, Duxbury, Easton, Hanover, Hanson, Hingham,
Marshfield, Medway, Norwell, Pembroke, Quincy, Randolph, Rockland,
