Jr. Celtics program

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Cardinal Cushing Centers is proud to be chosen as a host site for the 2016
Jr. Celtics Program.

Beginning in February, the Jr. Celtics Program is a four week program for
children with intellectual disabilities enrolled in grades three to five.
The program is designed to help participants develop their basketball game
through skills, drills and leadership training. The skills and drills are
all designed by coaches of the Boston Celtics and help challenge
participants in measurable ways over the course of four weeks. After
attending one of the Jr. Celtics clinics where they learn directly from
Celtics players, participants continue to improve their skills at their
home gym. The players track their skills on official Jr. Celtics Score
Sheets and data is reported back to the Celtics. They are challenged
through these clinics to improve their skills for a chance to come to a
Celtics Basketball Game as a Jr. Celtics All-Star.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Boston Celtics,”
said Cushing’s Vice President of Development, Jansi Chandler. “We
kicked off our collaboration on a wonderfully high note, with the Boston
Celtics and TD Bank overhauling our Recreation Center. It’s now a
beautiful and comfortable space where students can socialize and relax with
one another afterschool and on the weekends. We can’t wait to see
what’s next!”

The Cardinal Cushing Centers Jr. Celtics program will be held on Saturday
mornings from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in their school gym, located at 405
Washington Street. For more information or to sign up please contact Tom
McElman at 781-829-1295 or tmcelman@cushingcenters.org .

Cardinal Cushing Centers, Inc. is in the business of changing lives. A
non-profit organization founded in Hanover, MA in 1947, Cushing Centers
began as a day and residential school for students with intellectual
disabilities. With additional locations in Braintree, Cushing now supports
over 600 individuals of all ages, with the goal of helping each student and
adult to become included and independent members of society. Programs
include, among others, affordable housing, community programs, education,
employment training, recreational, therapeutic, and residential services.

Library book sale room volunteers needed

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Can you help?

The book sale room at our local Hanover Library is managed by a very small
group of dedicated volunteers yet brings in several thousand dollars each
year, money which pays for programming for children and for adults, for
many of the passes available to library patrons for Boston-area museums and
attractions, plus special requests from the Board of Trustees.

They need help! If you have a little time and would like to be part of
this effort, they’d love to have you join them. You’d sign up for an
occasional few days, stop by the book room at your convenience, sort and
shelve, then walk away smiling, knowing you’ve helped to carry on a great
effort.

For more information, please contact Emily Blampied, blampied@gmail.com.

Effective Strategies For Students with Anxiety-Related Behavior

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Please join the Hanover community as the SEPAC presents :

Effective Strategies For Students with Anxiety-Related Behavior

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Meeting Location:

Hanover High School

(Media Center – First Floor)

287 Cedar Street, Hanover

Description:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that 1 in 4 13-18 year
olds has had an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Without
intervention, these children are at risk for poor performance,
diminished learning, and social/behavior problems in school.
Understanding the role anxiety plays in a student’s behavior is
crucial and using preventive strategies are key to successful
intervention. Effective behavior plans for these students must avoid
the reward and punishment-based consequences from traditional behavior
plans and focus instead on the use of preventive strategies and on
explicitly teaching coping skills, self-monitoring, and alternative
responses.

Easy to implement preventive tools, strategies, and interventions for
reducing anxiety, increasing self-regulation, executive functioning,
and self-monitoring will be discussed.

Presented by: Jessica Minahan MEd, BCBA

A simple foul shot made it 1000

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

In the end, it was a simple foul shot. One point was all she needed, and
her opponents practically handed it to her. She had practiced this shot
ever since she could throw a ball ten feet in the air. But, that was long
after she worked very hard for years on end, including being double and
triple teamed at times last night, and muscled her way through the other
999 points.

The shot barely touched the rim, and swished in. Stephanie Flynn, senior
captain of the Hanover Girls Varsity Basketball team, had just scored her
1000th point in a lopsided game against Silver Lake at home last night.
She joined the ranks of just Jessica Sylvia and Kelly Duval and became only
the third female basketball player in Hanover High School history to attain
that amazing feat.

Please join me in congratulating this awesome three-sport athlete and
daughter of Dave and Kim Flynn. Nice job, Stephanie. Your town is proud
of you; good luck at Columbia next year!

Check your mailbox!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The annual town census has been mailed to all Hanover households. All
residents should review the information on the form, make any changes if
necessary, and sign and return the form as soon as possible. Household
members who are temporarily living away from home, such as college
students, members of the military services, etc., should not be removed
from the census if they plan to use Hanover as their voting address.

Also included in the census mailing are a Hanover School Information Sheet
and a Dog License Application. If relevant, these forms should also be
completed and may be returned in the enclosed addressed envelope or dropped
through the mail slot in the front door of the Hanover Town Hall. If you
did not receive a census form or are new to the Town of Hanover, please
contact the Board of Registrars at: 781-826-5000 ext. 1028 or the Town
Clerk at 781-826-5000 ext. 1079.

Completion of the annual census is important for a number of reasons. It
assists in accurate municipal planning, it provides public safety officials
with current information, and it allows Hanover to receive the proper
allocation of state and federal funds and grants. Filing a census can
provide proof of residency for a number of legal requirements such as
in-state tuition at state colleges, and housing benefits, veterans’
benefits, and insurance benefits. Also, any registered voters in a
household that fails to complete an annual census will lose their
“active” voter status.

For more information, please contact Senior Registrar Nancy Goldthwait at
nancy.goldthwait@hanover-ma.gov ,Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or Senior Clerk Meg Coogan at
meg.coogan@hanover-ma.gov .
