Dear fellow Hanoverians:
We all received the call on Friday regarding the town’s new water
restrictions, and I don’t know about you, but I for one was not home
when the call came in, and I always appreciate a written version of a
verbal message! Remember too that this will now be in the ATOTW
archives (link at the bottom of every e-mail) for your reference as
the summer continues. Special thanks to DPW Director Victor Diniak for
e-mailing me on a Sunday with the following information:

HANOVER WATER RESTRICTIONS
Due to water demand exceeding the ability of the Town’s well fields
to adequately supply such demand, and the lack of appreciable amounts
of rain predicted in the immediate future, the Hanover Town Manager
has declared a State of Water Supply Conservation under Town Bylaw
6-24. Effective immediately, the outdoor use of water is restricted to
odd numbered homes on odd days and even numbered homes on even days
between the hours of 6 am to 9 am and 6 pm to 9 pm. During this
period, outdoor water use shall be limited to hand held hoses only.
The use of sprinklers of any kind is prohibited. The restrictions will
be reevaluated as fall rains return groundwater levels to their normal
state. Any person violating the water restrictions shall be liable to
the Town in the amount of $50.00 for the first violation and $100.00
for each subsequent violation in accordance with the Hanover Town
By-Law 6-24. Private wells must be registered at the DPW office
(781-826-3189) and a “PRIVATE WELL” sign put out. This restriction
is necessary to ensure an adequate supply of water for drinking and
for firefighting purposes. Residents with questions regarding these
restrictions may contact the offices of the Hanover DPW at
781-826-3189.

The Moderator is looking for volunteers who are interested in helping
define the future of the Center/Sylvester School complex. Town Meeting
established a Center School Feasibility Study Committee and the
Moderator is looking for 5 members for this committee, which will
study the future needs of the facility and understand the process for
moving forward so that recommendations can be made at next year’s
town meeting.

I love it when unknown-to-me Hanover residents chime in and send me
helpful information for all of you. It’s yet another of one of the
many things that make this town great!
Special thanks to Hanover resident Katherine Wood for the following
update to last week’s Board of Health EEE e-mail:
The Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project website may be found at
http://www.plymouthmosquito.com
. Individuals can call the Project between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on
Monday through Friday to request that their property be sprayed. The
Project’s phone number is (781) 585-5450, fax (781)582-1276 or mail
us at P.O. Box 72, Kingston, MA 02364. To find out where the spray
routes are going to be, call (617) 582-6219 (during spray season).
Project personnel spray for mosquitoes using trucks between the hours
of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. The Project uses
ultra low volume (ULV) sprayers which allows minimal amounts of
pesticide to be used.

*Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)*
*Frequently Asked Questions*
*Updated July 20, 2012*

As you may be aware, they have found mosquitos that have tested
positive for the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in the towns of
Easton and Carver. While there have been no positive test results in
Hanover, the Board of Health is supplying all residents with the
following information:

*What is Eastern Equine Encephalitis?*

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but serious disease caused
by a virus.

*How is the EEE virus spread?*

The virus that causes EEE is spread through the bite of an infected
mosquito. In Massachusetts, the virus is most often identified in
mosquitoes found in and around freshwater, hardwood swamps. More
information about different types of mosquitoes that can spread the
virus can be found on the MDPH website at http://www.mass.gov/dph
.

EEE virus particularly infects birds, often with no evidence of
illness in the bird. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite
infected birds. Although humans and several other types of mammals,
particularly horses and llamas, can become infected, they do not
spread disease.

*What are the symptoms of EEE?*

The first symptoms of EEE are fever (often 103º to106ºF), stiff
neck, headache, and lack of energy. These symptoms show up three to
ten days after a bite from an infected mosquito. Inflammation and
swelling of the brain, called encephalitis, is the most dangerous and
frequent serious complication. The disease gets worse quickly and some
patients may go into coma within a week.

*What is the treatment for EEE?*

There is no treatment for EEE. In Massachusetts, about half of the
people identified with EEE died from the infection. People who survive
this disease will often be permanently disabled. Few people recover
completely.

*What can you do to protect yourself from EEE?*

Since the virus that causes EEE is spread by mosquitoes, here are some
things you can do to reduce your chances of being bitten:

· Schedule outdoor events to avoid the hours between dusk and dawn,
when mosquitoes are most active.

· When you are outdoors, wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and
socks. This may be difficult to do when the weather is hot, but it
will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
· Use a repellent with *DEET* (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide),
*permethrin, picaridin* (KBR 3023), *IR3535
(*3-[N-butyl-N-acetyl]-aminopropionic acid) or *oil of lemon
eucalyptus* [p-menthane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions
given on the product label. DEET products should not be used on
infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations
of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon Eucalyptus should not
be used on children under three years of age. Permethrin products are
intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and
camping gear and should not be applied to skin. More information on
choosing and using repellents safely is included in the MDPH Fact
Sheet on Mosquito Repellents which can be viewed online at
http://www.mass.gov/dph
. If you can’t go online, contact the MDPH at (617) 983-6800 for a
hard copy.

· Keep mosquitoes out of your house by repairing any holes in your
screens and making sure they are tightly attached to all your doors
and windows.

· Remove areas of standing water around your home. Here are some
suggestions:
ØLook around outside your house for containers and other things that
might collect water and turn them over, regularly empty them, or
dispose of them.
ØDrill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left
outdoors so that water can drain out.
ØClean clogged roof gutters; remove leaves and debris that may
prevent drainage of rainwater.
ØTurn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
ØChange the water in birdbaths every few days; aerate ornamental
ponds or stock them with fish.
ØKeep swimming pools clean and properly chlorinated; remove standing
water from pool covers.
ØUse landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your
property.

*Is the State considering Aerial Spraying?*

*Yes, but not in Hanover*, the Mass Dept. of Public Health will be
coordinating aerial spraying in the following towns starting Friday
July 20, 2012 and continue for approximately three days thru July 22,
2012. The towns that will conduct aerial spraying are: Acushnet,
Berkley, Bridgewater, Carver, Dighton, East Bridgewater, Easton,
Freetown, Halifax, Hanson, Kingston, Lakeville, Middleboro, Norton,
Pembroke, Plymouth, Raynham, Rehoboth, Rochester, Taunton and West
Bridgewater*. Again Hanover is not being sprayed, but keep in mind,
even in the Towns that are being sprayed, this is not a magic fix and
does not guarantee that all mosquitos will be killed, therefore,
safety precautions should still be adhered to. *

*Where can I get more information?*
· *EEE and personal protection: *MDPH, Division of Epidemiology and
Immunization at 617-983-6800 or online at http://www.mass.gov/dph
. You may also contact your local board of health (listed in the
telephone directory under “government”).
· Mosquito control in your city or town*: Mosquito control in
Massachusetts is conducted through nine mosquito control districts.
The State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board (SRMCB) oversee all
nine districts. Contact information for each district can be found
online at http://www.mass.gov/agr/mosquito/districts.htm
. You may also contact the SRMCB within the Massachusetts Department
of Agricultural Resources at 617-626-1777 or your local board of
health*.
· *You can also fax your Name, Address and Telephone number to
Plymouth County Mosquito Control at 781-582-1276 and they will
schedule your home for spraying. You can have your home sprayed up to
eight times during the summer months ending on Labor Day.*
· *Health effects of pesticides*: MDPH, Center for Environmental

A few additional words about my energy assessment as long as you have
read this far (you must be interested because otherwise this would
surely be over-kill!)…Dan Howard (whose name appears in that link)
was my “Home Energy Advisor”. He was friendly, professional and
thorough. He spent a couple or three hours at my house, climbed in my
attic to measure my insulation, tested my water heater, and installed
about $300 worth of free light bulbs that will save me close to $200

*Hanover Historical Society presents: Rebecca Stetson’s 1786 Tea in
the New Republic *

Admission: $5 Non-members, Members free

Join the Historical Society July 21st for a special tea for mothers
and daughters to celebrate the life of Rebecca Stetson, an American
girl who grew up in the Stetson House right after the American
Revolution. Hear stories of what it was like to grow up in Hanover
during the era of the New Republic and what daily life was like for
Rebecca. The tea will include special blends and cakes recipes from
the New Republic era. Girls are encouraged to bring any doll they wish
and dress up if they like.

Tea starts at 3:00 p.m. and lasts until 5:00 p.m.

July 14th, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.*

Admission: $5 Non-members, Members free

Join the Hanover Historical Society for Second Saturday family days at
the Stetson House to celebrate the past through hands-on learning with
crafts for the whole family. Each month will be based on a different
theme in American History beginning in July with the New Republic
1776-1800, the Civil War in August, and ending with WWII in September.
These programs will be a fun way for children to gain perspective on
chronological events and local history. Second Saturdays will take
place at the Stetson barn and grounds.

Below please find a fantastic opportunity for your girls’ lacrosse
player. Take her lax skills to the next level!
July 17th through August 23rd
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at King Street Fields
They are proud to announce that Minnie Doherty has joined the camp!
Minnie Doherty is a former Norwell High School and Northwestern
graduate. Minnie has coached for the Amonte Sports camps and the
Wildcat Elite Club Team in Chicago. During her time in graduate
school, she was an assistant lacrosse coach at The Harpeth Hall School
in Nashville and the head varsity coach at Pope John Paul II High
School in Hendersonville, TN. Minnie currently volunteers with the
Norwell High School Girls’ Lacrosse team. She is the owner and
director of Pure Lacrosse, which is a club team for 5th – 8th grade
girls.
The camp with also be coached by the 2013 Hanover girls varsity
lacrosse captains!
The coaching staff includes:
Taylor Graf will be coaching the seventh and eighth graders this
summer. She is entering her senior year at Hanover High. She was named
captain for her senior season. A four year varsity starter at attack,
she plays club lacrosse for NESSLL and participated in the summer Bay
State Games. She was named a Brines 2012 National all-American
underclassman.
Rachel Lawrence will be coaching the fifth and sixth graders this
summer. Rachel was named captain for her senior season. She has
started for the varsity lax team four years in arrow at attack. Rachel
has been playing club lax for the Mass Elite club team for the past
two years. Rachel is also a member of the summer Bay State Games
lacrosse team.
Casey Connors Will be coaching third and fourth graders this summer.
Casey was named captain for her senior season. She is a four year
starter on the varsity at defense. Casey is a member of the Mass Elite
club team. She will also be playing in the summer Bay State Games.
Casey received the sportsmanship award her sophomore season.
Madison Quinlan will be coaching K through second grade this summer.
She is entering her junior year at Hanover High. She also plays for
the high school lacrosse team. Maddie loves kids and is great at
teaching the correct fundamentals of lacrosse in a fun and effective
way. She has also helped coach the kindergarten lacrosse program in
town.
All of these girls have been through Hanover’s youth program and
want to give back to the community while sharing their love for the
sport. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!
This lacrosse camp is offered to girls in current kindergarten to
incoming freshman. Every player must have a stick, goggles and a
colored mouth guard.
Players must be a U S Lacrosse member.
This will be a summer program supervised by the Director of the
Hanover Youth Lacrosse program. Each week they will focus on skills,
drills, games and fun. Don’t miss out. The spaces are limited so do
not hesitate to sign up.
The cost of the camp is $150.00 for six weeks of summer camp, two days
a week!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Songwriter/singer/guitarist Jay Mankita will perform his “Big Dream
Songbook” on Wednesday, July 11 at 4:00 p.m. to officially begin the
John Curtis Library’s summer reading program for children. Jay plays
fun, funky songs on electric and acoustic guitars and invites
participation by kids of all ages and their families.

Mankita is also an environmental activist and tours in his
recycled-vegetable-oil-powered van. After the concert, he will give a
short presentation outdoors during which he tells families about the
van and how we can all help to care for the environment.

Registration for the library’s summer reading program will begin
after the show. Children who sign up for summer reading will receive
reading logs and be eligible to earn prizes throughout the summer
based on how much they read. This year’s summer reading theme is
“Dream Big– READ”. The statewide summer reading program is
sponsored by your local library, the Massachusetts Library System, the
Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

The concert is funded by the Friends of the John Curtis Library. Free
tickets are available at the children’s room desk. For more
