Share the holiday spirit and help those without permanent housing

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Would you like to share some seasonal holiday spirit? We can spread joy,
love, and compassion to those around us with acts of kindness and
generosity as we support those in need. The John Curtis Library, 534
Hanover Street, is collecting holiday stockings filled with necessities for
individuals living without permanent housing. Some of the new items that
are most appreciated are:

Gloves
Winter hats
Scarves
Hand and toe warmers
Small toiletries, lip balm, hand lotion
Candy, chocolates, gum
Gift cards to Walmart, Target, grocery stores or fast-food restaurants such
as Dunkin’ Donuts or McDonalds

The library will have a collection bin on the lobby counter for the holiday
stockings. The collection deadline is Friday, December 22. Your generosity
is greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, please contact
judyannkelly@gmail.com .

Cranberry Brass Quintet comes to Hanover FCC

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

December calendars tend to fill up quickly, so here’s an early suggestion
for your holiday season pleasure. The First Congregational Church of
Hanover, 547 Hanover Street, will be presenting a Christmas concert by the
Cranberry Brass Quintet at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, December 3.
Offering holiday cheer with French horn, trombone, tuba, and trumpets,
Cranberry Brass will perform a varied program including Christmas favorites
old and new. No charge, open to the public. Free-will donations
encouraged.

The Cranberry Brass Quintet was formed in 2018 by a group of music
educators from the South Shore. Its members represent school faculties in
Hanover, Norwell, Pembroke, and the Boston Conservatory. They have shared
their talent and love of music at numerous venues in the greater Boston
metropolitan area.
Cranberry Brass Members are:
Trumpet: Matt Harden & John O’Briant
French Horn: Sheri Fernandes
Trombone: Juli Thornell
Tuba: Austin Glass

FCC of Hanover is fortunate to be able to host them this year for their
congregation and our community. Following the concert, there will be a
time of fellowship and refreshments in the vestry. All are welcome. For
more information, reach out to: office@fcchanover.org or 781-826-4762, or
see the attached flyer.

Tax rates and a possible override

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Hall was bustling with activity last night, including meetings
of the Board of Assessors and the Select Board. At the Board of Assessors’
meeting, the Board voted to go back to recommending a split tax rate with a
shift to 1.04 for commercial, industrial and personal property, and .9926
for residential property. For more information about what this means,
please go to:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=fRWYwBMNQSqME+0qZ8LVbJXUmv/r/1RHuiwuOp/jI/loqLt7nDOIRqoN783ZLADJ
. This shift is similar to the shifts made in fiscal years 2020, 2021, and
2022, but slightly up from the 1.0 (no split) rate for FY’23.

Immediately following the Board of Assessors’ meeting, the Select Board
voted to concur with the Assessors’ recommendation, but not before
discussing a shift of 1.1 for commercial, industrial and personal property,
which would have resulted in a .9814 factor for residential property, which
was voted down.

In other big news, the Select Board directed Town Manager Colangelo to
continue to prepare a budget override option for our consideration at the
Annual Town Meeting and Town Election of May of 2024. For the latest
budget news, please go to the presentation found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=iM0+b10RBm2fS+FN5gU1KJXUmv/r/3RHuiwuOp/jI/loqLt7nDMYRqoN783ZLADJ
. The listings of potential service cuts without the override begin about
2/3 of the way through the presentation.

Now is the time to begin to educate yourself regarding our budget for next
spring! Be the one who knows what they are talking about at Thanksgiving
this year! And best wishes to you and your family over the holiday
weekend. :)

New sign at the library

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The John Curtis Free Library, 534 Hanover Street, is delighted to unveil
its striking new sign, which is sure to catch the eye of all who visit. The
Trustees and staff extend their heartfelt gratitude to former trustee
Elaine Shea and the Friends of the John Curtis Free Library for their
incredibly generous contributions, enabling the Library to acquire this
addition.

Elaine Shea, who sadly passed away in 2021, bequeathed a remarkable $10,000
to the library. Recognizing Elaine’s invaluable dedication, Trustee Chair
Jeanne Cianciola and Director Virginia Johnson proposed utilizing these
funds to honor her memory through this significant acquisition. Trustees
Tammy Tedeschi and Pimhatai Koslowsky wholeheartedly supported this
endeavor. With the additional financial assistance from the Friends, the
installation of the sign was successfully completed a few months ago. A
plaque will be affixed to the sign, commemorating these exceptional
donations.

Elaine Shea, a cherished resident of Hanover for over 50 years, served as a
Board of Trustees member from 2011 until her passing, with many of those
years spent as Chairperson. Her immense knowledge and experience proved
invaluable to both the Board and the community. Elaine’s absence is deeply
felt, and her contributions will always be remembered.

The good folks at the John Curtis Library invite everyone to admire the new
sign, which stands as a testament to Elaine Shea’s enduring impact on the
John Curtis Free Library and the Town of Hanover. For more information,
please contact Library Director Ginny Johnson at vjohnson@hanover.ocln.org

Congratulations, Robbie!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This coming Saturday, November 18th, please come celebrate the retirement
of long-time Hanover High School facilities custodian Robbie Hook. Robbie
is a hard-working dedicated employee at HHS who has certainly touched
countless lives over the 40+ years of his employment (36 continuous at HHS)
because of his constant willingness to go above and beyond the call of
duty. To know him is to appreciate him! His son Jason asked for help
getting the word out about this event – because there is no way for them to
know everyone who might want to be a part of the day.

Robbie Hook’s retirement party will be held this Saturday, 11/18, at the
American Legion on King Street in Hanover, from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. There
will be food and a cash bar. If you can’t make it, well wishes, cards or
gifts may be sent to Robbie at 74 School Street in Hanover. Or, his son
Jason is the custodian at the Hanover Council on Aging and can be reached
there.

On to the next chapter, Robbie! You will be sorely missed by so many,
including Hanover’s election staff! Thank you for everything you do and
have done for us.
