â??Two Old Friendsâ?? will make a welcome return to the John Curtis
Library on Wednesday, April 27th at 7:00 p.m. With banjo, guitar,
mandolin, concertina, and octave mandolin, Mac McHale and Emery
Hutchins tell a story in music of how immigrants came to this country
from Ireland, Scotland, and Great Britain, bringing their melodies and
instruments. The Two Old Friendsâ?? performance includes ballads,
gospel sing-a-longs, traditional Irish tunes, and storytelling. This
concert is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Admission is free
and refreshments will be served.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Community Preservation Committee is hosting an informational
meeting on *Wednesday April 27, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hanover
Senior Center* to discuss the article as presented by the CPC to the
Town Warrant for the upcoming Town Meeting. They invite all residents
to attend. The CPC will be discussing Article 20, which requests that
the Town Meeting approve the proposal that was received for the
renovation and construction of community housing at 645 Center Street
(sometimes called the Murtha property). The CPC has spent the past 2
years developing an appropriate Request for Proposals to ensure that
this property is redeveloped into 2 units of community housing and
preserving the historic façade of existing farmhouse for use as
affordable housing. The CPC welcomes all Hanover residents to attend
this meeting and give feedback on the proposed article. Anyone with

The Postal Workers Annual Food Drive is almost here again! It will be
held Saturday, May 7, 2011. There will be a combination of food drive
volunteers and postal service workers making the rounds. The Hanover
Food Pantry is in serious need of volunteers on that day again this
year. What better way to support residents of our town in need? Please
consider volunteering at the food pantry! It is also a great way for
those who need service hours to accrue some time for a good cause.

The good folks at the Hanover Food Pantry need:

â?¢ Drivers and gatherers (beginning as early as 10:00 a.m. or anytime
up through 3:00 p.m.) to go out on assigned routes for food pick-up.
Take a long route or a short route, no matter what; your help will be
appreciated. Youâ??ll be given a map, and you will bring the food you
gather back to the pantry.

â?¢ Sorters to be stationed at the pantry from 11:00 a.m. through 5:00
p.m., in two hour shifts. Feel free to stay as long as you like. The
food pantry will supply water, soda, coffee or tea and PB&J
sandwiches, along with hard work and a good time.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to drive and pick up or sort donations can
do so by e-mailing Sally Lovett Boutin at kidsense@comcast.net

or calling her at 781-826-6485, or on her cell at 781-799-0053.

Remember that all collected food stocks the shelves of our very own
Hanover Food Pantry for our friends and neighbors in need. The food
that is gathered each year at the Postal Workers Annual Food Drive
sees those in need through the summer when the churches, civic
organizations, schools and other groups stop or slow their regular
collections. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your continued support of the pantry by volunteering (or
stay tuned for more on donating food later!) on May 7th.

Have you ever wondered why someone runs for public office?

For the answer to this question and more, please join the Hanover
Woman’s Club, Juniors at their Annual Candidate’s Night on Tuesday,
April 26th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room of the Hanover
Town Hall.

The program will consist of a three minute presentation by each
candidate, followed by a question and answer period by you the voters.
We have 12 candidates running for office. The positions they would
like to fill are: School Committee – 3 year term; Selectmen – 3 year
term; Board of Public Works – 3 year term; Board of Health – 3 year
term; Moderator – one year term, Assessor and Library Trustee. Among
the candidates will be four people running for two spots on the School
Committee, which will surely generate some lively discussion!

This is your town and what happens in town affects you! As stated
above, join us at the Hanover Woman’s Club, Juniors Annual Candidate’s
Night on Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., in the Conference
Room of the Hanover Town Hall and meet and listen to the candidates
who want your vote!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

On April 26, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., a public meeting will be held at the
Memorial Park Elementary School, 1 Col. Brian Duffy Way in Rockland to
discuss the transformation of the West Hanover Branch of the Old
Colony Line to a recreational trail. This section of rail bed is owned
by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and
runs from Abington through Rockland and to the bridge over the
Drinkwater River in Hanover. The rail bed will be cleared of all
rails, ties and brush and compacted to make it suitable for walking or
mountain biking. Residents of Hanover would be able to access the
trail in West Hanover and go all the way to Abington. A representative
of Iron Horse Preservation Society, Inc., who will perform the work,
will be present to answer questions. The general public, business
people, committee and board members and representatives of interested
agencies are invited to attend. Please come and participate. If you

We are so lucky to already have access to the gorgeous new artificial
turf field at the new high school. It is also surely the most
expensive field this town has ever constructed with tax dollars. With
that in mind, please know that we are ALL therefore responsible for
maintaining it and taking care of it. Please heed the following
reminders regarding the use of the new Hanover High School turf field:

Only water is allowed inside the fences.

No food, gum, coffee, sports drinks, or anything else!

No dogs or other animals are allowed inside the fences.

If you see someone (surely from another town!) not following these
rules, please politely inform them of the policies and ask them to
step outside the fences. Let’s make this a positive community-wide
effort. Protect this field like you own it…because you do!

Special thanks to the School Building Committee and the contractors
for making this field available to us even before the new high school
is finished.

considered an expert in the field, having previously worked as an
intelligence analyst for the Massachusetts State Police. In addition,
she also worked as Internet Safety Coordinator for the Massachusetts

Looking for April vacation ideas? The Hanover Cultural Council is
excited to announce Kite Day 2011 for Hanover’s children. On Saturday,
April 23, Dr. Wallace Kemp will again open his field at 688 Main
Street from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to anyone interested in flying a
kite (pending good weather). This field is situated on a hill which
affords wonderful kite-flying on a moderately windy day. As the field
is part of larger conservation area of the Wildlands Trust of
Southeastern Massachusetts, there is plenty of space for all. Don
McCasland, the Program Director of the Blue Hill Observatory and an
avid kite-lover, will also be at the field to provide great tips on
kite-flying technique.

In conjunction with this event, the Friends of the John Curtis Free
Library will host a kite-making program on Saturday, April 23 from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. downstairs at the John Curtis Free Library.
Don McCasland will provide kite kits and show you how to construct
your kite. This event is recommended to children ages 4-8 with a
parent and for 8 and over without a parent (the parent must otherwise
remain in the library). The program lasts for about an hour. These
activities are free (funded by the Hanover Cultural Council and the
Friends of the John Curtis Free Library) and open to the public, but
you must register your child to make a kite at the children’s
circulation desk at the library. There are 40 spaces reserved from
10:15 am to 11:00 am, another 40 spaces from 11:15 am to 12:00 pm.

Teens and tweens ages 10 and up are invited to play Looney Tunes: Acme
Arsenal on the Wii in the meeting room. Snacks will be provided. We
also have a collection of Wii games that are available to borrow and
take home.

Hanover Teen Library Committee Meeting
Teens in middle school or high school are invited to plan events, tell
us which books, games, music and movies should be in the library
collection, and help make the library a great place for teens. Come to

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Attention parents of 6th graders in particular and any Hanover
resident in general who might want to support a Hanover rite of
passage – Hanover Middle Schoolâ??s 6th grade camp! Starting Monday,
April 18th, Curry Hardware in Hanover will have several of the
necessary â??Camp Squanto Survival Kitâ?? items available in the
store. When you visit the store, please come to the checkout counter
and ask for a Camp Squanto shopping list. On that list will be the
items that Curry Hardware carries and where theyâ??re located inside
of the store. Items will include: sunscreen, ponchos, sunglasses,
flashlights, batteries, first aid kits, insect repellent, hand
sanitizer and trash bags. Donâ??t have a 6th grader but still want to
support 6th grade camp? You can still buy any of the items on the list
for your personal use.

When checking out, please be sure to have that list with you so they
know that youâ??re shopping for Camp Squanto! Curry Hardware will be
keeping a record of all sales. At the end they will tally up the
â??Camp Squanto Salesâ?? and donate 20% of the total sales back to
Hanover Middle School. This donation will be used to offset camp costs
(both for the trip and for the materials that create the trip).
