Upgrades to “Around Town on the Web”

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Some of you may have noticed that â??Around Town on the Webâ?? has
been a little quiet since Saturday of this week. Apologies to those of
you who have requested postings recently and have been delayed! We
have been going through some technical changes and upgrades that will
simply serve you better (oh, and keep our web hosts happy!). With over
1,100 recipients and more than 300 e-mails in an average year, we
create a volume of e-mail that is simply hard to manage without
overloading our server!

I am blessed with the expertise of Hanover resident and ATOTW
volunteer Mike Van Lare, who has painstakingly and patiently guided me
through this process. ATOTW would have certainly gone down the tubes
without him! Please continue to bear with us in the coming days as
there will surely continue to be a few bumps in the road.

Thanks to all of you for being devoted and eager readers of all that
makes our town great.

Change to Civil Service provisions?

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Appearing in the 2011 Annual Town Meeting Warrant will be Article 16:

ARTICLE 16. To see if the Town will authorize the Board of Selectmen to
petition the Great and General Court of the Commonwealth to enact special
legislation that would exempt the position of Deputy Fire Chief from the
provisions of the Civil Service Law and Rules, or take any other action
relative thereto.

After the positive recommendation of Civil Service by the Civil Service
Study Committee and unanimous support at the 2004 Annual Town Meeting, Civil
Service was enacted for the Town of Hanover Fire Department in 2004. Seven
years later, Article 16 of the 2011 Annual Town Meeting proposes to remove
the Deputy Fire Chief position from the provisions of Civil Service. On
Thursday, April 14, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the Board of Selectmen will
allow those with questions and concerns about this issue to be heard. The
public is encouraged to attend the meeting that will be held in the large
hearing room of Town Hall.

finishes at the Town Hall. Pre-registration is at 7:00 a.m. and the
official race begins at 9:00 a.m. There will also be a "Fun Run" available

Future location of a historic barn to be discussed

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

April 13, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. – Barn Meeting at John Curtis Library, Large
Conference Room

The Friends of the Stetson House will hold an open meeting to explore
possibly moving the dismantled barn from 645 Center Street to the Stetson
House property. The historic barn was part of the 645 Center Street
property purchased by the town at the recommendation of the Community
Preservation Committee at town meeting four years ago. It is believed this
historic barn was originally built in the early to mid 1800’s and that only
ten such barns still exist in the United States. Currently the barn is
being stored in a trailer and all sections of the barn have been labeled and
marked. Anyone interested in attending is welcome.

Further information can be obtained by contacting John O’Leary by e-mail at
jdoleary5@verizon.net or by phone at 781-982-9140.

Do you have unwanted medications you want to dispose of?

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Along with the Hanover Board of Health and the Hanover Police Department,
the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.) is coordinating a nationwide
one-day event to take back unwanted medications on Saturday, April 30, 2011
at the Hanover Senior Center, 665 Center Street, Hanover, between the hours
of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

This national initiative will provide an opportunity for the public to
surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law
enforcement officers for destruction. Expired, unused or unwanted
substances in our homes are a potential source of supply for the increasing
abuse of pharmaceutical drugs in the United States and an unacceptable risk
to public health and safety.

As with all "ATOTW" notices, this is the only e-mail you will receive
regarding this event, so mark your calendars now!

Hanover Healthy Kids Initiative next steps

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Those of you with children in the Hanover Schools will know that there were
changes made to school lunch menus this year in order to introduce healthier
foods for Hanover’s students. This effort was led by a group of individuals
who collectively called themselves the Hanover Healthy Kids Initiative.
After a few months of getting adjusted to the changes, the group would like
to invite anyone from the community to attend and be a part of their review
and next steps. The following information came to me from "HHKI"
coordinators Bridgette DeMinico and Hope Recupero!

We would like to start with a meeting to share any information learned
and/or feedback from any of the changes that have been made. Then we would
like to set a plan in place for….more volunteers to spearhead initiatives
like: education, web design, fund raising, community awareness – etc.!!

Please join us :
MONDAY, APRIL 11, 2011
John Curtis Free Library
6:00 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room

Please come and bring a friend – plan dinner ahead and make it happen!!!!!!
Thanks so much for your anticipated continued support!! For more
information, please contact Bridgette DeMinico at bdeminico@comcast.net .
