The North and South River Watershed Association will sponsor a loop walk from Luddam’s Ford to the Tucker Preserve on Sunday, September 26th at 1:00 p.m.    Enjoy a long fall walk with long time volunteer and Hanover resident Judy Grecco. The walk begins at Luddam’s Ford Park in Hanover, continues along the old railroad bed along Luddam’s Ford Pond to Hanson, then loops back through Pembroke through the Tucker Preserve (across the pond from where you started).  This is an approximately 4 mile walk.  To register, e-mail paula@nsrwa.org or call (781)-659-8168.

CRAFTERS
WANTED

for the

16TH ANNUAL FALL CRAFT FAIR

South Shore Vocational Technical High School, 476 Webster
Street

to be held on

Saturday, October 16, 2010

 

The Parents Association of South Shore Vocational Technical
High School will be sponsoring their Annual Fall Craft Fair on Saturday,
October 16, 2010 to raise money for enrichment activities for the students.  The
fair will run from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.  The cost for an 8-foot space will
be $50.00.  Doors open at 8:30 a.m. for set up and spaces must be completed by
9:45 a.m.  Students will be available to assist with set up and break down of
displays.  Limited electrical spaces will be available.  Tables will not be
provided.

 

All items to be sold should be hand crafted and of top
quality.  Each crafter will be asked to donate one of their products for a
raffle, and we ask that crafters do not conduct their own raffles.  Refreshments
will be offered in the cafeteria for crafters and customers.  This fair will be
advertised in local newspapers, on cable television and on signs posted in all
towns in which our students reside.

Learn to play hockey with Hanover Youth Hockey!!!!!!   Time
is running out…..SIGN UP NOW.
 
The Hanover Youth Hockey Instructional Program introduces skaters ages 5-8 to
hockey. Skill development, skating, and FUN is the goal!  Full equipment
required.

Beginning in early October, there will be one game per weekend in the small rink
at the Pilgrim Arena in Hingham.  In addition to this game, there is also an
optional skills session every
Sunday.
 
Registration:

We will be at the Hanover Middle School on Monday,
September 27th and Tuesday, September 28th from 7:00 –
9:00 p.m. for registration and to answer any questions. In addition, you
may download the form on-line at www.hanoverhockey.com  (under
documents) and mail forms and deposit to Hanover Youth Hockey Association, P.O.
Box 591, Hanover, MA  02339.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

 

The Hanover Cultural Council has
set an October 15, 2010 postmark deadline for organizations, schools and
individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the
community.  According to Council spokesperson Katie Duff, these grants can
support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Hanover — including
exhibits, festivals, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools,
workshops and lectures.  The Council will also entertain funding proposals from
schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, which provides subsidies for
school-age children to attend cultural field trips.

 

The Hanover Cultural Council is
part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and
towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural
funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects
in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides
an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency,
which then allocates funds to each community.

 

This year, the Hanover Cultural
Council will distribute about $3,870.00 in grants.  Previously funded projects
include: programs at the John Curtis Library such as their piano concerts, “Two
Old Friends”, and the Plimouth Plantation pass; “Christmas
Splendor”, a Harbor Choral Arts Society concert; outreach for Hanover
High School Music Department and more.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

 

The Hanover Historical Society is meeting on Tuesday,
September 21st at the Phoenix Lodge at Hanover Four Corners. 
Social hour begins at 6:00 p.m., a roast pork dinner with all the trimmings is
at 7:00 p.m., and the program begins at 8:00 p.m.  Former President of the
Society Les Molyneaux will present his research on Dr. Lloyd Vernon
Briggs, author, historian and psychologist.  Dr. Briggs summered in
Hanover at Broad Oak Farm most of his life, and is the person responsible for
saving the Stetson House in its current form.  In 1927, he gave the house
to the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA – now
called Historic New England) and they maintained the property for 50
years until the Town of Hanover purchased the house in 1978.  Les has done
a lot of research on Dr. Briggs, and we hope to have a good turnout for this
meeting.  Cost of the dinner is $15.00 payable at the door that evening,
but reservations are necessary.  Please contact Richard & Pauline
Rockwell at 781-826-1689 to reserve.  You may attend just the program
portion at 8:00 p.m. at no cost and with no reservation.

 

On a separate, but related note, the Phoenix Lodge breakfast
scheduled for Sunday the 26th will be held from 8:00 a.m. –
12:00 noon.  Sorry for the omission of the time in a previous e-mail.

perishable food item for the Hanover Food Pantry would be appreciated.

 

Phoenix Lodge, a Masonic Lodge,
has been a part of the Hanover community since 1874. We are involved in
supporting a number of charities which help people locally.

 

Our breakfast is intended to
provide a comfortable atmosphere where family and friends can enjoy a good
breakfast that is relatively inexpensive, spend time enjoying each others’
company, and not be rushed. 

 

Our breakfast is a source of
funds for the lodge to support the various charitable activities in which we
are engaged, such at the local food banks, our Angel Fund, our Red Cross Blood
Drive, South Shore Vo-Tech Scholarships, Habitat for Humanity, Rainbow and
Demolay.

On September 21st at 7:00 p.m.,
noted historian Anthony Sammarco will present a lavishly illustrated slide
lecture on Howard Johnson, who is credited with being the “Father of the
Franchise Industry”.  Howard Johnson was born in Wollaston,
Massachusetts and began his empire by selling newspapers, cigars, and ice
cream, which by the 1930s would include 28 flavors, with a recipe for
delectable double fat ice cream that brought patrons back for more.

 

This program, held at our very own John Curtis
Library, is sponsored by the Friends of the John Curtis Library and is open and
free to the public.  Refreshments will be served.
