Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The unofficial Hanover results from the primary election
held Tuesday are in, and they are as follows:

On the Democratic ballot, Governor Patrick and Lt. Governor
Murray, Attorney General Coakley and Sec’y of State Galvin were all
winners.  In the contested races, Steven Grossman was the Democratic
winner for Treasurer, Suzanne Bump for State Auditor, and William Keating for
Representative in Congress.  Hometown favorites Rhonda Nyman and Rick Pond
were also Hanover’s winners for State Representative and Sheriff,
respectively.

On the Republican side, Baker and Tisei will lead off the
ballot for Governor and Lt. Gov. in November.  There was no name on the
ballot for the Republicans for Attorney General, but the write-ins were
numerous and are still being counted.  In a hotly contested race for the
10th Congressional District, Jeffrey Perry won in all four precincts
in Hanover, and in another contested race, Korey Welch was the top vote-getter
for the 5th Plymouth District State Rep’s race here in
Hanover.

We took more Republican ballots than Democratic ballots in
Hanover this time around.  Remember that votes are still being counted
around the state as I write this, so none of the contested races are final.
 2,635 of us took the time to vote here in Hanover, which is a 29%
turnout.  Primary turnouts are traditionally small, but Hanover voters
always seem to speak their minds in far greater numbers than most towns, and
this year was no exception.

The Hanover Open Space Committee
(OSC) invites you to celebrate the opening of the Stasiluk-Nava Conservation Area
Saturday, October 2nd at 10:00 a.m.  Using your Community
Preservation funds, the town secured this beautiful mix of woods and meadowland
property in the fall of 2008.

Over the past two years, OSC members, neighbors and volunteers have restored
the scenic rock-wall-lined view, and cleared encroaching brush in the meadow.  Beginning
in Spring of 2010, Eagle Scout candidate Jonathon Terry developed the first
looped trail through the wooded portions of the property.  The Department
of Public Works generously worked with the OSC team to clear a small parking
lot near the southeast corner of the property.  The team will work with
local garden club members to restore portions of Mrs. Nava’s beautiful perennial
gardens on the property.  "We are excited to add this important
parcel into our greenway strategy.  In addition, plans are already
underway for an additional seasonal trail through the grassy area with the
addition of benches to view bird houses volunteers have built" shares
committee co-chair Mary Dunn.  The property is located at 553 Center
Street.

Working with the OSC and the Hanover Historical Society, committee member Judy Grecco
will lead a walk from the Fire Museum through the Merry and Morrill Allen
Phillips properties (located between Broadway and Center Streets) at the end of
October.

Stay informed about activities
and volunteer opportunities!  You can find the OSC on Facebook: Hanover
Open Space, the web: http://www.hanover-m a.gov/open-space.shtml,
or join their Yahoo Group: HanoverOpenSpace.  In addition, the OSC wants
for input from the equestrian community in town.  Please let the OSC know
if you can contribute your specialized
knowledge and needs to the volunteer committee.

The Hanover OSC was chartered to ensure that the town’s rural character is
maintained and enhanced both through protection of existing resources and
acquisition of new properties.  It is responsible for planning and
facilitating the improvement of open space, enhancing access to open space, and
raising awareness of land use issues.  The OSC is also interested in
protecting land that is environmentally sensitive, could be used for passive
recreation, or is important for conserving the look and feel of the town.
 The OSC’s goal is to retain the natural beauty and heritage of the
town we live in and love.

The OSC would also like to hear from you if you are simply interested in more
information on the work of the committee.  The Open Space Committee meets regularly
on the 1st Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Hanover Town Hall.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Newcomers is a social
club for women who enjoy making new friends and participating in various
activities including social outings, family events, and community
service.  One need not be "new" to Hanover to be a member and
the fall is a great time to join!  New member events will be happening
throughout the next few months and our playgroups are forming too.  Our
board has been busy planning some great family activities as well as
"Ladies Only" events.  Come meet some of our members and find
out what we have to offer.  

Join us at our annual Dessert
Social to be held this Wednesday September 15th from 7:30 p.m. –
10:00 p.m.  This event is casual and open-house style, so feel free to

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Many of you have written wondering what is going on with the
tree removal project on Main Street.  Thanks so much to Curt Mac Lean, the
Deputy Superintendent/Tree Warden for the DPW for providing this response to my
inquiry:

The trees on Main Street that are being
removed are part of National Grid’s hazard tree mitigation program. 
Out of the all trees you see being removed, only 9 were town trees and 2 of the
9 were just trims.  The rest of the trees are private and are being
removed with the home owners’ approval.  Mr. Mac Lean personally
looked at all trees that were in the town’s right of way, and approved
them at the Scenic Roads Hearing at the Town Hall held on August 16,2010 at 7
p.m.  If you have any other questions, please call Curt Mac Lean at the
D.P.W. at 781-826-3189.

Do you have unwanted medication(s) you need to dispose of?

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.), along with the Hanover Board of
Health and the Hanover Police Department, is coordinating a nationwide
one-day event to take back unwanted medications on Saturday, September 25,
2010 at the Hanover Town Hall on Route 139 in Hanover, between the hours of
10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

This national initiative will provide an opportunity for the public to
surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law
enforcement officers for destruction. Expired, unused or unwanted
substances in our homes are a potential source of supply for the increasing
abuse of pharmaceutical drugs in the United States and an unacceptable risk
to public health and safety.

Hanover youngster Olivia Rolnik sent along the following
e-mail that reaches across cultures for the greater good.  I am cutting
and pasting it in its entirety because it is just so awesome.  Olivia, you
are “doin’ Hanover (and your parents) proud!”  Congratulations
on your impending milestone, too.

I am organizing a back pack drive
for Haiti as a charity project for my upcoming Bat Mitzvah and was hoping you
could post this on ATOTW. 

Since it is the start of the new
school year, a lot of kids may have bought new backpacks.  So, if you have
any old backpacks laying around the house, would you consider donating them for
children in Haiti still suffering from the earthquake earlier this year? 
We will take the backpacks, fill them with school supplies, and ship them to
Haiti where they will be distributed by Hanover resident Ms. Kerline
Tofuri’s Jou Nouvo and Partners in Development (http://jounouvo.pidonline.org) . 
There will be a bin for the backpacks in the Hanover Library until Monday,

The annual Hanover Education
Foundation Yard Sale is fast approaching! Scheduled to be held on Saturday,
September 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Hanover Town
Hall, all proceeds from this event will be used to fund grant awards to benefit
students in all schools.  All donations to this worthwhile cause are
welcome and may be dropped off at the home of Mugsie Sarson, 88 Whiting St.
(red house) under the garage portico prior to the event (beginning September
20) or delivered on the day of the sale.  Please drop off larger items at
the Town Hall parking lot on the day of the yard sale.  For further

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Arthur Ceurvels, Jr. Park
Dedication 

Art Ceurvels served on the Parks and Recreation Committee
from 1988 – 2006 and is directly responsible for much of the well known growth
of the Parks and Recreation Department during that time.  In the late
90’s, with the help of the National Guard, Art organized the expansion of the
Myrtle Street Fields to include a full size little league field, a Babe Ruth
field, basketball courts, a picnic area, as well as a small multipurpose field.
 In May of 2010, the Town Meeting passed a motion to rename Myrtle Field
"Arthur Ceurvels, Jr. Park".  The rededication of this facility
is set to take place on September 11th at 9:00 a.m. on site at
Myrtle Street.  The Parks and Recreation Committee would like to invite
all residents of Hanover to attend this event and join in the celebration of
all the work that Art has done for the Town of Hanover.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The
Friends of the John Curtis Free Library want to congratulate this year’s
raffle basket winners: Jodi Schofield who won the American Girl Doll Basket
and Danny McDonald who won the Hanover Basket. The competition was stiff
this year as many people purchased chances to win over the course of the
summer!  We would like to thank the winners and everyone else who
participated in this annual fundraising event at the library.  Over $600
was raised to support and enhance the programs and acquisitions at our great
library.  We look forward to putting these funds to good use.

Special
thanks are extended to the local companies and individuals who contributed to
these baskets and made this event possible:  the Hanover
YMCA for a 3-month family membership, Storybook Cove, the Toy Box, Rockland

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Foundation for
Educational Enrichment (HFEE) will host its opening meeting of the school year
on Thursday, September 23, 7:30 p.m., at the home of Heather Carr, 31 Ash Lane.
 We encourage anyone interested to attend.  The Hanover Foundation is a
non-profit organization founded in 1991 to provide enrichment of the curriculum
of the Hanover Public Schools.  In the past four years, the Foundation has
allocated $70,000 to the schools.  Last year, the High School received funding
for the performance “Dirt”, a Jazz Artist and Clinician, and
technology such as Interwrite Mobi with Kwik Screen and TI Smart View.  The
Middle School was the recipient of two document cameras, funding for Cricket
Robotics and the Freedom Trail School Visiting Program.  Cedar School received
funding for materials called The Six Traits.  Center/Sylvester School benefited
from programs such as Tidepool Alive!, The Windmill Workshop, and Discovery
Education Technology.

New members are always welcome.
