Tree lighting for JDRF postponed until tonight

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

NOTE! THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL THIS EVENING, SUNDAY, DECEMBER
6TH, AT 7:00 P.M.!!!!!!!!!

On Saturday, December 5th, at 7 p.m. (rain date is December 6th) the Smith
Family is hosting their 6th annual tree lighting for juvenile diabetes.
Come enjoy the lights, music, raffles and treats. They are located at 428
King Street in Hanover.

Their son Michael was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes on December 9th,
2003. Since then, the Smith Family has lit a Christmas tree in their yard
(along with lots of other decorations and lights) to help raise money and
make people aware of Type 1 diabetes. So far they have raised approximately
$15,000 with the help of lots of family, friends and kind and generous
residents of Hanover. Each donation gets us closer to finding a cure. 100%
of the proceeds from the tree lighting will go to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation).

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease. In a child with Type 1 diabetes
(juvenile diabetes) the pancreas does not produce insulin, a hormone
necessary to sustain life. Without insulin the sugar in the blood can’t be
used. It builds up in the bloodstream even while the body is starved for
energy. A person with Type 1 diabetes must take one or more injections of
insulin daily to stay alive. Insulin, however, is not a cure. It is only a
means of controlling the disease.

So bundle up and come enjoy the lights, music and atmosphere and get in the
Christmas spirit! If you can’t make it on the 5th, the Smith family
welcomes you to take a stroll in their yard anytime! Or, go to
www.diabetesfundraiser.com to check out their awesome new website or for
lots more information.

Cub Scouts are collecting for the food pantry!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Cub Scout Pack 39 is currently gathering canned and dry goods for donation
to the Hanover Food Pantry. The boys are collecting donations individually,
but they would really love some help! If you are able to donate some
canned/dry goods towards stocking the Hanover Food Pantry, items may be
dropped off Saturday, December 12th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Riley Hall
(during their Pack Meeting). If that is not convenient, a basket will also
be located at the home of Community Service Coordinator Jennie
Griffith-Carney at 712 Hanover Street (on the front porch) until Tuesday,
December 15th.

After they collect the donations, the boys of Pack 39 will deliver all of
the many thoughtful items donated to the Hanover Food Pantry and then help
them to restock the shelves. During this holiday season when times are
tough for many, any donation that you could offer would be greatly
appreciated!

For more information, or if you have a huge box full of donations that you
would like picked up, please contact Community Service Coordinator Jennie
Griffith-Carney at jengriffith@verizon.net. Thank you so much and best
wishes for happy holidays from the gang at Pack 39!

Candy for a Cause wraps up

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I received a great note from reader Libby Corbo yesterday that I just had to
pass along to all of you. Long-time readers will remember that Libby was
woman who single-handedly orchestrated a massive candy collection at the
John Curtis Library after Halloween for our troops abroad.

Just an update and note of thanks to ATOTW readers for all of the help with
"Candy for a Cause." We mailed 28 boxes of candy to soldiers from MA
serving overseas, including several Hanover residents who were nominated by
readers. It could not have been done without AT&T Mobility (and reader
Peter Nixon) of Hanover which so graciously offered to pay for shipping all
28 boxes. The store manager, Chris, actually met me at the post office and
helped to unload all the boxes. Reader Paul Hutchins of Lawn Ranger
Landscaping and Chris of AT&T donated money that also allowed me to purchase
a large package of baby wipes (in high demand there) for each box. ATOTW
recipient Patty Cockey offered beautiful cards made by the children in St.
Mary’s CCD classes and (another ATOTW recipient) Joanne Collins coordinated
cards from the Hanover Middle School fifth grade classes of Ms. Dubois, Ms.
Paul, Mr. Ryan, Ms. McKenna, Ms. Hurley, Ms. Brandmark and Ms. O’Brien.
WOW! It is incredibly inspiring to think of what the community did for the
troops. I wish I could be there when the boxes are opened and those
beautiful cards are read. I enclosed a note in each box telling each of the
soldiers about the community effort that created the box and the cards, as
well as thanking the soldier and wishing him or her a safe return home.

I am sending along a link and hope you will pass it along. This will take
people to the public Facebook page containing pictures of the project. I
also hope to post pictures in the Library (whose staff was amazingly helpful
with the collection):

Thank you ATOTW! Next year I hope to make the drive even better.
