Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Police Boys Club is a nonprofit fitness center
for the people of Hanover and has been open for over 30 years.  This year,
as in past years, they will be presenting four high school seniors with college
scholarships, and they also continue to support many of the other fine
organizations here in Hanover.  The upcoming golf tournament helps keep
the doors open for anyone that wants to come in and work out.  Below are
the details!

The Hanover Diversity Committee to sponsor LOGO
Art Contest

“The mission of the Hanover Diversity Committee is
to help our community celebrate and cherish the diversity in this town and the
world, so that all will feel safe and comfortable here being who they are.”

The students of Hanover Public Schools are
invited to design the logo for the Diversity Committee.  The winning
design will be included on our letterhead, brochure, and all public materials.

Details

Size: The logo must be on an 8” by 11”
white piece of paper.  Any medium may be used to create the original logo.

Front: The design should have the capability of
reproduction and size reduction of 2” by 2”.

Back:  The student’s name, school, grade,
and phone number or e-mail address should be clearly printed.

Deadline:  Entries must be submitted by June 11th
and will be picked up at each school on Friday June 12th.

Selection of the best 15 entries will be completed by
members of the PACT club at the high school.  There will be three entries
chosen from each of the elementary schools, middle school, and high school.  Final
judging will be take place on Hanover Day, June 20th, where members
of community may cast a ballot for their favorite logo.

The winner will be notified and acknowledgement of their
achievement will be publicized.  Certificates will also be awarded to the
top place winners from each school.  We greatly appreciate your
participation and willingness to share your time and talents in designing the

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

No matter if this is your first Memorial Day in Hanover or
if you know the parade route by heart, our small-town observances are a slice
of Americana that we all should participate in and appreciate.  I hope you
will join our veterans as we remember the fallen among them.

·       
There will be a Memorial Sunday church service at the First Baptist
Church on Sunday, May 24th at 10:15 a.m.

·       
Boy Scout Troop 38 of Hanover will host their annual pancake breakfast
on Monday, May 25th at St. Mary’s Parish Hall from 7:00
– 9:30 a.m.  Tickets are available at the door; $5.00 for adults,
$3.50 for seniors, $2.50 for kids 12 and under, and veterans are free!

The Stetson House will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. thanks to
the Friends of the Stetson House.  A special exhibit will feature
“Hanover Art and Artists”.

·       
Boy Scout Troop 1 of Hanover will once again be providing coffee,
donuts, hot dogs, refreshments and baked goods for sale at the corner of 139
and Silver Street beginning at 8:30 a.m. for all those in need of nourishment
before and during the parade!

·       
For those participating in the parade, it will
form at 9:45 a.m. behind St. Mary’s Parish Hall.

·       
The Memorial Day parade will step off at 10:00 a.m. from behind the St.
Mary’s Parish Hall, stopping traffic on Hanover Street/139, stopping at the
Sylvester School Memorial Flagstaff to honor the WWI vets, proceeding on to
several stops and observances in the cemetery including the Urn for Unknown
Soldiers, then on to the Civil War monument and the WWII, Korean, Vietnam and
Persian Gulf monument located at Town Hall.  Highlights of the parade will
include performances from the HHS Marching Band, and speeches from elected
officials at Town Hall.  All veterans are invited to participate in the
parade that will honor their extraordinary service to our country.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Did you notice the full-page ad in the Hanover Mariner this
week as placed by “511 Washington Street LLC” – also known as
the developers of North Pointe?  If you subscribe to the Mariner, it was
certainly hard to miss.  I received e-mails and phone calls as a result of
the ad and went looking for more information to share with you as a result.

North Pointe was originally developed under the provisions
of 40B as an over 55 rental unit complex of 74 units.  Nineteen out of 74
of those units, or 25%, were deemed “affordable”, thereby counting all
74 units toward the town’s goal of 10% affordable housing.  According
to the North Pointe Office, it opened for business in 2005 and currently 47 out
of 74 of those units are rented, including all 19 of the affordable units. 
The “market rate” apartments are renting for $1375 (including heat
and hot water) for a one bedroom apartment and $1675 (including heat and hot water)
for a two bedroom apartment.

The developer has previously come to the Hanover Zoning
Board of Appeals over two issues and with two different requests, both purportedly
in an effort to fill the units:  One to convert all the rental units into
condominiums for purchase, and the other to remove the over 55 age
restriction.  The ZBA turned down both requests, but the developer has
pursued and won the most recent appeal of the age restriction removal request. 
Right now, today, people under the age of 55 can move into North Pointe.  The
town has appealed this decision of the Land Court to the Massachusetts Appeals
Court.

Last Wednesday’s ad in the Mariner suggested that
taxpayers should question the most recent town appeal by asking “is this
how I want my tax dollars spent”?  Interested readers of “Around
Town on the Web” have asked “(do we really) want these apartments flooding with children that we have not planned on
and really draining our town resources”?  I personally wonder why
the units have not filled?

It’s an intriguing

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover
High School art teacher Janet Curley recently received two grants – one from
the Hanover Cultural Council, and one from the Hanover Education Foundation.  The
grants brought an artist-in-residence to HHS students and also purchased new
pottery wheels and supplies.  Ms. Curley has scheduled a art reception for
her students on Thursday, May 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.  The public is invited
to view the students’ art work which was produced as a result of these grants.  For

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Trying to decide what to get Dad
for Father’s Day?  Here’s an idea:  4 box seats to the
Red Sox!  “ATOTW” is proud to announce its second on-line
auction of Red Sox tickets…this time to benefit the Hanover Food
Pantry.  The on-line auction will take place during the first week of
June…details to follow as we get closer.  The tickets are for seats
located in Section 11, Box 10, Row L for the game to be played ON
Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21st at 1:35 p.m. against the
Atlanta Braves.  Is there a better Father’s Day present out
there?  I can’t think of one.  J

So, for the planners among you,
keep this idea in the back of your head.  It’s a win-win – Dad
gets to go to the Red Sox, and your check is a tax-deductible contribution to
the Hanover Food Pantry (as supported by the First Congregational Church of
Hanover).  Again, details regarding the auction will follow as June rolls
around.
