Friday, June 19th will be a wonderful night in
Hanover.  The Hanover Garden Club will be sponsoring Art in Bloom at the
Stetson House and all are invited to attend.  This event starts at 6:00 p.m.,
and at 7:30 p.m. there will be a dedication of an American Elm tree to Janet
O’Brien, our former Selectman, State Representative and Town Moderator. 
For those of us who knew and loved Jan, this should be a fantastic evening. 
One of Jan’s paintings will be featured in the Stetson House, and it will
be accompanied by a floral arrangement by her long time friend Judy
Grecco.   At 7:30 there will  be a brief ceremony for the
dedication and we will hear from Cathy Harder-Bernier, who worked side by side
with Jan, as well as from her friend of many years, Fred Briggs.  Bob
Nyman will close the ceremonies and everyone is invited to make a pass through
the Stetson House to enjoy refreshments and take another look at the art and
arrangements.  Plan to be at the Stetson House early so that we can start
at 7:30 p.m. with the dedication.  We look forward to seeing you
there.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The
Junior Southeast Massachusetts School Bandmasters Association (SEMSBA), which
was established in 1950, held its concert on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at East
Middle School in Braintree, Massachusetts. The purpose of SEMSBA has been to
raise the standard of school instrumental and choral music, as well as promote
greater community interest in school music programs. These selected students
have the opportunity to come together to experience the enjoyment of performing
some of the world’s best musical literature. Students in grades 7 through 9
from 30 school districts tried out for SEMSBA in February to fill
spots in the chorus, band and orchestra. I am pleased to announce that Hanover
student Bryana Koch was selected to be in the band and Hanover students Anna
Moran, Jessica Kenny, Kendra Cameron and Abigail Adams were selected for the chorus.
Way to go ladies!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

In case you were hoping to get your car washed and were
disappointed about the recent cancellation of the event at Living Hope, the
First Congregational Church’s Senior High Fellowship Group has come to
the rescue!  They will be holding a fundraising car wash on Saturday, June
13th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Riley Hall parking lot in
the center of town.

Proceeds raised will go toward their mission trip to
Mississippi.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Lions have replaced their old, well-worn Community Calendar Sign
outside the entrance to the Hanover Transfer Station.  The new sign was
generously purchased and donated by the Hanover Mall Association and will be
administered by the Lions Club members.  Non-profit organizations
that would like to advertise their upcoming events should call (781) 826-2691
or e-mail Lions member Bob Shea at CLERK@HANOVER-MA.GOV. &nbsp ;  Any
calls MUST be accompanied by a signed, dated, hard copy or it will not be
placed on the sign.  All requests are subject to availability.

Also, the collection box for used Eyeglasses and Hearing Aids has been relocated
from just outside the Town Clerk’s Office to the Walnut Hill Recycling
Center adjacent to the office next to the pit at the Transfer Station. In
addition, there is an Eyeglass/Hearing Aid Collection Box at the Senior Center.

The Hanover Lions Club is an
integral part of all that makes Hanover an awesome place to live.  Please
join me in thanking our Lions members when you see them!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Have you heard about the young Hanover resident who is
planning to navigate all 72 miles of the Wampanoag Canoe passage (which
includes our North River) this weekend?  Quite an amazing feat!  Here’s
a letter from him, as reprinted by request from the good folks at the North and
South Rivers Watershed Association:

The
North River has always meant a lot to me. As a kid growing up on the Third
Herring Brook, I loved swimming in the river, catching minnows and crayfish,
and going on boating expeditions either to the Spit or upriver towards the
Hanover canoe launch with my family. As I grew older, the river continued to be
a big part of my life.  My grandma gave me a Poke boat, enabling solo
expeditions, and as I got even older I began to take part in NSRWA’s
annual Great River Race with a neighbor.

This
past summer I got to know a lot more about the North and South Rivers Watershed
Association (http://nsrwa.org/ ) through my
experience as a leader of River Adventures Camp, as an intern helping monitor
flows in the Third Herring Brook to see how it was affected by drinking water
withdrawals, and educating kids at local events and through the kayak camp.
 I realized last summer that for my entire childhood, NSRWA had been
working to create a community of those who love the rivers, to make sure that
the rivers stay clean, and to maintain the wildness and beauty of the watershed
for those living in nearby South Shore suburbs.

Now,
having realized how important the NSRWA is, I plan on canoeing the Wampanoag
Canoe Passage, an historic route of the Wampanoag tribe that connects the North
and Taunton Rivers and Massachusetts and Narragansett Bays. I hope that my
journey will raise both awareness of our historic waterways and funds to help
preserve them.

Throughout
my experience with the river, the North and South River Watershed Association
has been there along with me, protecting what I love and teaching me how to
keep and restore it for the generations that come after me.  Now I hope to
give back by undertaking this trip.  If you have benefited from the North River,

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I love it when I get e-mails about events in town from the
young people of Hanover.  It shows me that our kids are taking initiative
and have a strong hand in planning and organizing an event.  Here’s
the latest from all-around good kid Tyler Cheo:

This Saturday, May 30th, is the Battle of the Bands
that the First Congregational Church Junior High Fellowship is putting on.  It
is one of our many fundraisers to offset the cost of their mission trip to
Mississippi to help Hurricane Katrina victims this June.

It is at Riley Hall, 515 Hanover St., on May 30th
from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the door.

Things will be hopping at the Congo Church this Saturday…between
the free Wellness Expo and the Battle of the Bands!  Enjoy!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Working in the yard all day?  Too tired to cook?  Don’t
bother–come to dinner at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, May 30th. 
The Youth Group is hosting a dinner/fundraiser at 6:00 p.m.  They will
serve Chicken- Broccoli-Ziti, plus all the extras such as salad, bread
with dipping oil, drinks, coffee and dessert.  During the dessert, the
youth will entertain you with piano and flute music!  The cost is
only $12, $10 for Seniors, and $45 for a family of 4 or more.

Come support the St. Andrew’s Youth Group and enjoy a
great meal at a great price!
