Red Sox vs. Yankees this weekend – want to go?!  “Around
Town on the Web” enters a whole new world effective as of this e-mail. 
Please consider being a part of this exciting venture as we raise money for the
Hanover Habitat for Humanity house!

“A friend” of Around Town on the Web who lives in
Hanover has donated 4 tickets to this Sunday’s Red Sox game
against the Yankees to the Hanover Habitat for Humanity house.  The
seats are located just past first base in Section 11, Box 10, Row L.  They
have a face value of approximately $500, and game time is currently set for
8:05 p.m. Sunday, April 26th.

The tickets will be awarded to the highest bidder as of
10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25th.  Please submit your bid by
replying to this e-mail!  Those bidding will receive updates regarding the
current price of the bid.  (Please understand that updates will not happen
24/7, but I will do my best!).  The winner will be notified by e-mail and
instructions regarding the exchange of the tickets for the Hanover Habitat for
Humanity house donation will follow.

As you might already know, the Hanover-Rockland High School
Swim team is a completely self-funded sport.  So, whenever they throw a
fundraiser, I try to make an effort to join in the fun.  This weekend’s
efforts will not be an exception; I hope to see you there!  Here’s
the scoop, just in from devoted coach Barb Toohey:

Wash, Saturday, April 25

a.m. – 2:00 p.m.,  Riley Hall (Congregational Church), Hanover

All
proceeds to benefit the High School Swim Team, a self-funded sport at the high
school.

We
are accepting donations for the car wash – so there is no set fee to have your
car washed!

Every year for as long as I can remember, the Hanover
Woman’s Club, Juniors (and the League of Women Voters before them) hosts
the all-important Annual Hanover Candidate’s Night prior to the May
Annual Town Elections.  This year is certainly no exception.  On
Tuesday, April 28th beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the large meeting room
at Town Hall, candidates for town-wide office will state their views on the
various issues facing our town and their respective sought-after offices.

This year there are contested races for both Selectman and
the Board of Health, as well as the all-important Town Manager ballot
question.  Candidates for positions on the Board of Assessors, Board of
Public Works, Housing Authority, Planning Board, School Committee, Library
Trustees and the position of Town Moderator have also been asked to
attend.  A representative from the Town Manager Study Committee will
outline that proposal, too.

Audience members will receive a packet of background resumes
upon their arrival.  Candidates will make opening statements, and then the
audience will be invited to write down their questions and submit them to the
Candidate’s Night moderator (yours truly!) for consideration.  The
moderator will then run a round-robin question and answer session.

Hanover Candidate’s Night is always an informative and
lively evening.  A well-educated electorate is a cornerstone of successful
democracy.  Don’t miss it!  I’ll look forward to seeing
you there.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Please donate to the Annual Book and Bake Sale hosted by the
Friends of the John Curtis Free Library:

The Friends of the John Curtis Free Library will hold their Annual
Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, May 16 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the library
(rain or shine).  Plan to come and leave with
armloads of great summer reading for bargain-basement prices ($2 each for
hard-covers/$1 each for paperbacks).

This is the biggest fundraiser for the Friends, and we rely on the
town to donate any books, CDs, tapes, DVDs, and videos in good condition.  Please
do some spring cleaning now for the library and help fund extra programs, book
acquisitions, and museum/cultural passes for all.  All donations may be
dropped off at the library during regular library hours. The library will
continue to accept donations until Friday, May 15 (no magazines or textbooks
please).

Please be advised that the public book sale room will be closed
beginning April 27 so that we may organize for the sale on May 16.

The Friends are also looking for people who can help with the bake
sale and/or volunteering at this event. If you are interested
in baking, please sign the list at either the adult or the children circulation

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

David Coffin, a musician, singer, storyteller, educator
and maritime specialist, will present “Life At Sea:  A Voyage In
Song” at the John Curtis Library on Tuesday, April 21 at 4:00 p.m. 
The musical program recreates a

voyage on an old New England whaling ship, with the
audience members serving as the ship’s crew.  Mr. Coffin will lead
the audience in singing sea shanties, “hoisting the sails”, and
acting out other shipboard

activities.  Playing the concertina and other
instruments, he is particularly skilled at getting a whole audience
singing.  There will also be an appearance by his friend, “Pierre
with the bad hair”.  The program is very

interactive, full of humor, and informative as well as
entertaining. 

Mr. Coffin is a descendant of the Nantucket Coffins,
one of the most prominent American seafaring families.   He is a
multi-talented performer who has been playing and singing music in many genres
at hundreds of

venues all over the country for more than 20 years.  The
program is for families with children in kindergarten and older.  Free advance
tickets are available but not crucial.  For more information, please call

give a book to every entrant that comes to the event.

Teen
star McKenzie Rae will perform songs from her new album at noon and 3:00
p.m. in Center Court.

Lisa
and her Big Puppet Friends will put on  2 musical shows about saving the
environment at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Center Court.

The Bean, mascot for Beantown Toys.

Shack – Dispose of rechargeable batteries as well as collecting used cell
phones and donate to battered women’s shelters.

Locker – Collecting old athletic shoes of any brand for Nike’s
“Reuse-A-Shoe” program.  Shoes are transformed into sports surfaces
and playgrounds.

Several
Mall retailers will be showcasing their environmentally preferable products and
practices, and restaurants will be sampling products throughout the day. Look
for the Earth Day flags.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

What are you going to do with your April vacation? The Hanover
Cultural Council is excited to announce Kite Day 2009 for Hanover’s children.
On Saturday, April 25, Dr. Wallace Kemp will again open his field at 688
Main Street from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to anyone interested in flying a kite
(rain date is Sunday, April 26). This field is situated on a hill which affords
wonderful kite-flying on a moderately windy day. As the field is part of larger
conservation area of the Wildlands Trust of Southeastern Massachusetts, there
is plenty of space for all. Don McCasland, the Program Director of the Blue
Hill Observatory and an avid kite-lover, will also be at the field to provide
great tips on kite-flying technique.

In conjunction with this event, the Friends of the John Curtis
Free Library will host a kite-making program on Saturday, April 25 from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. downstairs at the John Curtis Free Library. Don
McCasland will provide kite kits and show you how to construct your kite. This
event is recommended to children ages 4-8 with a parent and for 8 and over
without a parent (the parent must otherwise remain in the library).  The
program lasts for about 45 minutes.  These activities are free (funded by
the Hanover Cultural Council and the Friends of the John Curtis Free Library)
and open to the public, but you must register your child to make a kite at
the children’s circulation desk at the library.  There are 40 spaces
reserved from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., another 40 spaces from 11:15 a.m. to
12:00 p.m.

Looking forward to this May’s Town Election? 
Voting will take place at the Hanover High School polls on Saturday, May 9th
from 8:00 a.m. ‘til 6:00 p.m.  Do you know already that you will be
out of town or otherwise unable to make it to the polls that day? 
Absentee ballots are now available in the Town Clerk’s Office.  Stop
by and fill yours out today!  Remember that the Clerk closes at noon on
Fridays but is open until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.  Absentee ballots need to
be completed before 12 noon on Friday, May 8th.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

School vacation week is almost upon us, and it’s
supposed to get up to 70 degrees today.  Hanover’s children will be
out in full force this afternoon…and good for them!  With the change
in season, however, comes a cautionary note for all of us from our neighbors in
Norwell.  Yes, this is Norwell news, but who is to say that  a
similar situation won’t happen in Hanover today?  It is too close
for comfort.  Parents – enjoy the weather, and be vigilant with your
children.  Our police need our support…and for all of us to be their
eyes and ears.  Don’t hesitate to call them to report suspicious
behavior.  The Hanover Police Business line is 781-826-3231, and of
course, in case of an emergency, dial 911.

This e-mail came from Chief Ross of the Norwell Police
Department.  It’s validity has been ascertained, and no further incidents
have occurred since this past Tuesday:

On 04/14/09 at 1:52 PM a
suspicious incident was reported to the Norwell Police Department.  A
resident that lives in the Central Street area called to report that there were
several children age 10-13 out playing on a front lawn.  A blue van with
windows down the side and a stripe down the side drove down the dead end
road.  The vehicle turned around and stopped before exiting.  The
male party put down his window and then took a picture of the children and
drove off. There is no further description of the vehicle or operator at this
time.  At this time we are asking anyone with information to call Norwell
Detectives at 1-781-659-7979 so we may identify this person and investigate
further to determine if any crime was committed.

at the Annual Town Meeting on Monday, May 4.  With this decision comes the
responsibility for all of us to become armed with the facts regarding the
establishment of a Town Manager form of government.  Residents are invited to

Room at 7:30 p.m. to learn more about this worthwhile proposal and why a Town
Manager is so vital to our long term interests as a community.  For further
