Attention all parents with children on an IEP:  Are
you prepared for your child’s Annual IEP Meeting?

Please join the Hanover Parent Advisory Council tomorrow night for
“The Parent Playbook:  How To Be An Effective Member Of The IEP
Team”.  This workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 7th, from 7:00
p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Hanover High School Library.  In this interactive workshop
presented by Elaine Rabbitt, Parent Support Specialist from EMR Parent Support
Services, you will learn techniques and strategies that will prepare and
organize you for an IEP team meeting.

Strategies for “Playing” on the IEP Team

How to Effect the Outcome of the IEP Team

How to Create A “Whole Team” Approach (not School vs. Family)

The Power of Positive Thinking

Elaine
currently advocates for her own son and mentors and supports families in their
journey of advocating for their children. She has received training through the
Federation of Children with Special Needs and Wrightslaw.  The workshop is free and open to the public.  For

What is Hanover PAC?  The PAC is a parent group whose mission

for all children.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The community of Hanover will be faced with an important
decision at the May Annual  Town Meeting – the potential
establishment of a Town Manager form of government.  The Town Manager
Study Committee has worked diligently with departments, boards, officials, and
residents to draft a proposal which more effectively addresses the future needs
of the town.  Residents who would like to work on the passage of this
proposal are welcome to attend a meeting on Monday, April 13, 7:30 p.m., in the
Hanover Police Station Community Room.   To learn more about this
effort and why a Town Manager form of government will best meet the challenges
of the future, please join the Committee on the 13th.  For

Dear
fellow Hanoverians:

Long
time readers of “Around Town on the Web” will remember stories
about Hanover’s own Josh Benner, son of Chris and Corina Silva of
Hanover.  Josh is a Hanover High grad and the father of two ridiculously
adorable children.  J &nbsp ;SSgt.
Benner has also been stationed in Muqdadiya, Iraq for the past 15 months. 
As you may remember, Josh was struck by the poverty that he encountered in Iraq
– and felt especially sad for the children who were growing up
essentially without anything, with preventable and treatable illnesses, and in
a war zone, no less.  One thing led to another, and Josh’s mom and I
organized a collection of donations of toys and over-the-counter medical
supplies from all of you.  For 15 months, these donations from the people of
Hanover helped Josh to help the Iraqi people.  His efforts, through your
generosity, certainly helped to restore some of the credibility of Americans in
Iraq!

It
is with great delight that I write to you today to announce that SSgt. Benner
has arrived safely in Kuwait to begin his transfer proceedings.  He will
meet up with his dear wife Amanda in Hawaii on Friday (two days from now!), and
be back in Hanover on April 17th!  Such great news; I could not
resist shouting it from the rooftops.  As Josh begins the next chapter of
his life, I hope you will join me in thanking him and welcoming him home! 
And thanks so much to all of you for your support in the meantime.

If your car looks anything like mine does after the winter
we’ve had, you will appreciate this e-mail news!

This Saturday, April 4th, a car wash will be held
from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church’s Riley Hall
parking lot to benefit the 6th annual Congregational Church youth
mission trip to Mississippi.  Donations will be accepted to help defray
expenses of the trip to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

April!  The April Showers Prize-a-Day Giveaway sponsored by the Hanover
Parent Teacher Alliance starts this week!  Beginning April 1st, we will
draw one winner per day to receive the prize listed on the calendar.  Go

to print out the prize-a-day calendar and entry forms. Make a few copies
for friends, family or colleagues who may be interested in buying a couple
chances to win some great April prizes and support Hanover school programming
at the same time.  Each chance to win is only $5.00 and if you are lucky
enough to be a winner, your name goes right back in the draw – so you may
win many times!  Checks should be made out to HPTA and sent with your
completed entry form(s) and mailed to the Hanover Middle School, 45 Whiting
Street, Hanover, or sent in with your child to any of the school offices.

from this fundraiser will support special programs offered to all children in

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

During this short lull between the end of winter basketball
and hockey seasons and the advent of spring soccer, baseball and softball, I
encourage you to take a moment and read up on the Hanover Permanent Scholarship
Fund.  This is a great organization that has quietly given away almost a
half of a million dollars to Hanover school seniors since its inception in
1977.  But, unless you have had a child graduate from high school
recently, my guess is that the HPSF is off your radar.  Your awareness of
and an investment now in the HPSF will ensure that even larger scholarships
will be available for Hanover students in the years to come.

I had the chance to catch up with a couple members of the
organization this week, and was pleased to learn that they have invested
conservatively over the years. So despite the stock market decline, they will
be able to maintain the dollar amounts given in the form of scholarships at
graduation this spring.  The concern that I still have, though, is that the
need is far greater this year.  Many of us have watched our college funds
decline by 50%.  And what about our friends and neighbors who don’t
have college funds?  The general HPSF scholarships are awarded based on
academic achievement AND financial need.  Thank goodness.

FRIENDS OF CIARA TO HOST FUNDRAISER

FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 2009 7 pm

Harmon Golf and Fitness Club, 168 Concord St, Rockland

Friends are hosting the Second Annual Benefit for almost
three-year-old Ciara Leonard, who was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was
16 months old.   Ciara is the daughter of Joe and Nancy Leonard,
owners of Hanover Country Florist in Hanover.

The event will feature music with DJ Liz Craven, raffles,
live and silent auctions. Suggested donation is $15 per person or $25 for a
couple.  Among the items for bid will be Red Sox tickets, tables at the
Boston Pops, American Repertory Theatre subscription, tickets to Boston
Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty, vacations and more.

Since her diagnosis of Medulloblastoma, a very aggressive
form of cancer in 2007, Ciara has undergone many months of surgeries, rounds of
chemotherapy, and a stem cell transplant.  Just past the first year
anniversary of the transplant, Ciara’s latest MRIs show no evidence of
cancer.  Although this is great news, Ciara will continue to need medical
care with specialists, follow up diagnostic tests, physical and occupational
therapy and medications. 

Advocating and caring for Ciara has become a full time job
for her mother, Nancy.  The loss of Nancy’s income, and the costs
associated with continuing care (even with an excellent medical plan), has
placed a significant financial burden on this young family. The goal of this
fundraiser is to help relieve the parents of some of the constant money
pressures.

Today, Ciara is beginning to enjoy life again.  Mixed
with doctor visits and tests, Ciara can be found at the flower shop, giggling
and talking, and walking with assistance from Mom and Dad.   She and
her family have just returned from a trip sponsored by the Make a Wish
Foundation to Disney World in Florida, home to Ciara’s favorite
character, Tigger.

Donations to help Ciara may be made out to the CIARA LEONARD
BENEFIT ACCOUNT and deposited at Rockland Trust in Hanover, left at the flower
