Dear fellow Hanoverians:

On Thursday, January 29th, hundreds of Hanover
residents had the opportunity to participate in “Rachel’s Challenge”,
the unique program based on the life of Rachel Joy Scott, the first girl to die
in the Columbine High School shootings in 1999.  With kudos to the Hanover
Foundation for Educational Enrichment for funding the program, I hereby offer some
talking points for your dinner table this weekend!

If a member of your family was able to view the program “Rachel’s
Challenge”, did she or he accept the challenge?  Maybe you are not
sure.  Ask!  There’s a banner full of signatures at Hanover
High School to attest to the impact the program had on Hanover’s
own.  Here are the components of Rachel’s Challenge:

I recently read with interest about the new Hanover Energy
Advisory Committee that was established by the Board of Selectmen.  Below
please find their introductory letter, as recently distributed by the Selectmen’s
Office:

Hanover Energy Advisory Committee

The
Hanover Energy Advisory Committee was established by the Hanover Board of
Selectmen. The committee was formed and held the first meeting on September 23,
2008.

Purpose/Charge:

Our
Mission is to identify opportunities and make recommendations with regard to
reducing energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency and exploring
alternative energy usage, through the development of energy policies, practices
and implementing technologies that will increase cost savings for the
municipality.

Objectives:

1.     
Inventory the energy
consumption by all Town owned buildings, vehicles, and equipment to establish
benchmarks and obtain baseline data.  Utilize the baseline data to
identify improvement opportunities and to measure the future progress achieved.

2.     
Evaluate partnership
organizations (local utilities, State & Federal programs, etc.) that could
provide technical assistance, grants and other resources that will aid in
reducing the Town’s energy costs, energy consumption and greenhouse gas
emissions.

3.     
Develop
recommendations to promote and implement energy conservation measures for
existing and forthcoming Town owned buildings, vehicles, and equipment.

4.     
 Research and
explore the feasibility and funding sources for alternative energy
technologies. Develop policies and recommendations to promote renewable energy
initiatives and assist with their implementation.

5.     
Draft and endorse an Energy
Policy that would set the course for achieving a 20% reduction of energy (and
resulting costs) over a 5 year period per the Green Communities Act and open
further grant opportunities.

6.     
Work with town officials to establish regulations for
all new residential, commercial and industrial construction that promotes
energy efficiency, conservation or alternative power generation in conjunction
with the Green Communities Act to minimize life-cycle energy costs.

7.     
Establish standards for purchase of fuel-efficient
vehicles.

8.     
Explore the Green Communities Act, as-of-right siting
in designated locations for Renewable Energy/Alternative Energy
‘Generation’ and/or RE/AE ‘Research and Development’
and/or RE/AE ‘Manufacturing’. And an expedited 12 month
application/permitting process.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

With the governor’s recently announced cuts to local
aid and the overall current and continuing decline in revenues, I am sure the
topic of this meeting will not be of a surprise to anyone.  While this
meeting is geared to Town boards, committees, employees and unions, many of you
wear one of those hats and/or are just plain interested.  This will
certainly become a topic for discussion at Town Meeting in May.  With my thanks
to the good folks of the HTA, I am pleased to provide the following
information:

The Board of Selectmen will be
hosting a Town-wide Budget Workshop with the purpose of discussing the upcoming
challenges for FY ’09 and our anticipated revenues for FY ’10.

At this workshop, the Selectmen
would like each individual Department to identify the areas that may be
impacted during these challenging times.  The Selectmen will provide
additional financial information on or before January 27th.  It
is the intention of this meeting to allow each individual department to share
their challenges with every other department. 

The workshop will be held on
Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 9:00 AM, at the Center School, 65 Silver Street,
Hanover, MA. 

We encourage all boards,
employees, and bargaining units to attend.   Please reserve the
date.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Not to be outdone by last week’s offer from Starbucks
for free coffee, it seems that our very own Panera Bread, located at the Hanover
Mall (1401 Washington Street), will be offering free coffee to Hanover (or
otherwise) residents who stop in this Wednesday, January 28th, 2009.

In addition to free coffee all day, Panera will be offering
up free samples of their new breakfast foods.  It’s a promotion that’s
hard to pass up, especially given the tough economic times.

I love it when I get to spread good news.  At
Starbucks, you just had to promise 5 hours of community service to get free
coffee.  At Panera, you just have to show up.  I have to say that I
like the former offer better…but either way, it all is good news for
you.  Enjoy!

I have fielded several inquiries regarding
“Rachel’s Challenge”, the Columbine High School tragedy-based
program that is supported by the Hanover Foundation and scheduled to be held this
Thursday, January 29th.  It is a powerful program and I am
psyched that it is coming to Hanover!  Parents are wondering if their
children will already attend, if it is suitable for younger children, or if
they themselves will be able to go.  With special thanks to Korrie Jones
of the Hanover High School Faculty, here are some further details for your
information:

Schedule of Events – Thursday, 1/29/08

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.       1st
morning assembly for 9th and 11th graders

9:10 a.m. – 10:10 a.m.     2nd
morning assembly for 10th and 12th graders

10:20 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.   3rd morning
assembly for 8th graders

12:30 a.m. – 2:06 a.m.     Friends of
Rachel training for PACT team leaders at the High School and
volunteer students, including 27 8th graders.

7:00 p.m.                     & nbsp;      Community
evening program for all members of the Hanover community. 

The Thursday evening program is designed and suitable for
adults and children ages 11 and up.  Parents of children younger than 11 should
use their discretion as they decide whether or not to bring those children –
and certainly plan to take the time to discuss Columbine before the program.

All events will be held at the high school.  There will
also be baked goods and drinks for sale to help raise money for the P.A.C.T.
(Pass on kindness; Act by reaching out; Connect with others; Teach each other
compassion and respect)/Team Room Program.  Thanks to the HFEE and
supportive residents of Hanover for providing this awesome opportunity for our
community.  See you there!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 5th at the
Parish Hall of the First Congregational Church of Hanover, Tim Cummings, an
oncology social worker with and program director of the Wellness Community of
the South Shore, will talk about cancer support, education and hope for those
in treatment and their caregivers.  Tim will share insights and resources
for those who find themselves trying to negotiate the unfamiliar landscape that
comes with a cancer diagnosis and its treatment.  The Wellness Community
of the South Shore provides professionally-led support groups, educational
workshops, nutrition and exercise programs, and mind-body classes. These resources
are designed to help people affected by cancer to learn vital skills that
enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of
the stage of their disease.  The Parish Hall is located at 17 Silver Street
near the town center.  The program is free and is offered in conjunction
with the Labyrinth.  The Labyrinth will be available from 6:00 – 9:00
p.m. for meditation, walking, rest and renewal.  For more information

The previous e-mail regarding the upcoming Parks and Rec
programs, particularly the info regarding the Zumba class at the Boys Club,
raised lots of great questions about both Zumba and the Police Boys Club. 
I am pleased, therefore, to provide this further information!

The Hanover Police Boys Club has been in town for years and
years, and it is a little known secret and true gem of Hanover.  It is
located behind Town Hall.  Special thanks to John Ferraro, Board member of
the Boys Club, who sent along the following details regarding the hours that

Further, this just in from my pal and Zumba instructor Jen
Lloyd! 

“Zumba is great for all ages and fitness levels. 
Currently, I have a 14 year old and a 60-something year old in my class. 
Most participants this session are probably in their 40’s.  With the
exception of one or two people, this is the first Zumba class they have ever
taken, so you would not be in the midst of experts.  There are not
currently any men in the class, but I would happily welcome them.”
