Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Parks and Recreation Department has created its
own e-mail distribution list for the purpose of distributing information
regarding up-coming recreation programs.  Once you (or a member of your
family) participates in a program, you’ll be added to the list.  But,
what if you haven’t been added to the list yet?  E-mail recreation@hanover-ma.gov today, or
stay tuned to “Around Town on the Web”!  In the meantime, and
at the risk of duplicating e-mails for some of you, I offer the following cut-and-pasted
communiqué from Marc Craig, the Hanover Recreation Administrator:

****Park
and Rec Summer Program Info Nights****

These
information nights are to notify parents of the changes in Park and Rec for
this upcoming summer.  While these nights are not mandatory, I HIGHLY
suggest that you attend. For parents with multiple children, you will only need
to attend one night. If your assigned night does not work you may attend a
different one.  These info sessions will be held at the Town Hall starting
promptly at 7. I look forward to seeing you there.

***Zumba***

Zumba
has become a humongous hit. The first session is about half-way through, but
feel free to drop in for $10 per night. Classes are held at 7:30 PM on Tuesdays
at the Hanover Boys Club. A second session will be offered starting February 24th.
We have also added a Friday morning class at 9:15 AM starting February 26th.

***CPR***

CPR
Classes are held monthly at the Town Hall. The next class is February 4th
at 6PM. The class costs $50.

***Disney
on Ice***

 During
February Vacation (President’s Day) we are headed back to the TD
Banknorth Garden to enjoy another Disney on Ice show. The bus will leave at 11
AM from the Town Hall for the 1PM show on February 16th. Ticket and
Bus ride is only $25 per person.

***Jonas
Brothers 3D Concert***

After
the HUGE success of our fall movie we decided to do it once again at Patriot
Cinemas. This time we will be going to see the Jonas Brothers 3D Concert, if
you haven’t heard of it ask your kids I guarantee they have. Parents can
drop their kids off at the movie theater, and they will be fully supervised by
my staff. (It is a great way you can get out of seeing ANOTHER Disney movie,
and have some alone time!) We have reserved a theater for the 11AM showing on
February 28th. The cost of $12 includes movie, popcorn and a drink.

***Scrapbooki ng
Class***

Information
will be available next week about our scrapbooking class which will take place
at Riley Hall. Please email me if you would like more info.

***Lego
Days***

  & nbsp; 
This half day Tuesday program held at the Town Hall. Your son or daughter will
love a GIANT box of Legos spread across the floor. Allow them to create
towering buildings while you take some much needed time off.  The next
Lego day is February 24th. Classes are from 2PM- 4PM for $7.

***Summer
Trips***

 We
are offering some amazing trips coming this summer. First, is a trip to Toronto
May 29th-31st for a Red Sox game. Second, is a trip to
Baltimore/Washington DC July 31st- August 2nd for a Red
Sox game and tour of DC. Third, I am working with AAA to get a Hanover
Recreation 9 day cruise lined up, leaving from New Jersey headed down to
the Caribbean. More info will be available at the Park and Rec Info Sessions.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Parks and Recreation Department is embarking on
a little economic stimulus plan of its own.  In addition to completing
interviews for the Summer Recreation Director last week, there is a newly
created year-round part-time “Senior Clerical Intermittent”
position that is now posted on the town’s website at http://www.hanover-ma.gov/pdf/forms/personnel/ParksRecPT-jan09.pdf
.  This position will be funded out of the Parks and Recreation revolving
account, which is funded by user fees rather than the town’s general
fund.  Apply now!  Applications are due January 30th.

For those interested in a summer job, there are multitudes
now posted at http://www.hanover-ma.gov/pdf/forms/personnel/ParksRecSummer-jan09 .pdf
.  Those are also fully funded by the revolving account.

Parks and Recreation is also proud to announce the hiring of
Environmental Partners Group, a local firm, for the engineering and design of
the King Street recreation project.  These funds are available thanks to
the Community Preservation Fund and Town Meeting’s approval.  Final
concept drawings will be viewed by the Committee next week!  Stay tuned
for details.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Learn about “New England Owls” when the South Shore
Natural Science Center comes to the John Curtis Free Library on Thursday,
February 19th at 4:00 pm.  The Friends of the Library are looking
forward to this February vacation event.  Explore the world of these
magnificent nocturnal animals and find out “whooo” comes out in
Hanover when the sun goes down — you’ll even get to meet Hedwig, the
Science Center’s Barred Owl.  Bring your questions for this 45-minute presentation.
 For Hedwig’s sake, there is a maximum of 50 participants ages 3 and
up. This event is free to all, but tickets are required and limited
to 50!  Please pick them up at the children’s circulation desk now.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Foundation for
Educational Enrichment proudly invites all residents to attend a community
presentation of "Rachel’s Challenge" on Thursday, January 29, at 7:00
PM, in the high school auditorium.  Rachel Scott was the first person
killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999.  Rachel’s acts of
kindness and compassion coupled with the content of her six diaries have become
the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America. 
Through its annual Grants Awards Program, the Foundation voted to allocate
$4550 to fund this important project . An award of this magnitude would not be
possible without the generous support of our fundraising efforts given by the
entire Hanover community.

Powerful audio/video footage of
“Rachel’s Challenge” will be shown to students in a one-hour school
presentation, followed by a 45-minute training session involving both adult and
student leaders. The impact upon students has been enormous and motivates them
to positively change the way they treat others.  This interactive
technique creates and helps sustain a positive climate change within the school
and beyond.  “Rachel’s Challenge” offers a year-long
curriculum called the Friends of Rachel (FOR) program that continues training
students and plugs them into activities that continue the chain reaction of

The Foundation especially thanks
teachers Janet Curley, Lisa Green, Christine Fay, Korri Jones, Keri Morrison,

“Rachel’s Challenge”.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I love
when I have the opportunity to promote the good works of a local Hanover business. 
This particular highlight is even more meaningful because of yesterday’s
inauguration and President Obama’s call to service – which so
directly resonates with all I purport to do with “Around Town on the Web”. 
One of my favorite Girl Scout volunteers sent this along (I hope she gets
herself some free coffee)…read on! 

Starbucks and
HandsOn Network are joining to launch the “I’m In!” campaign,
an initiative to make it easy to participate in the President’s call for
national service.  In participating Starbucks stores across the nation
(and yes, I called and checked, Hanover is participating), the American public
will have an opportunity to pledge five hours or more of community service
toward a local volunteer opportunity of choice. Starbucks will honor each
person who pledges with a free tall brewed coffee beginning Wednesday, Jan. 21
through Sunday, Jan. 25.  The goal of the effort is to raise pledges in
excess of one million hours of service from all over the country.

You can join the “I’m In” campaign, part of the
Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ commitment to community involvement, when
visiting the Hanover Starbucks beginning Wednesday, Jan. 21 (and continuing
through Sunday, Jan. 25).  Stop by the “I’m In” display
featuring community pledge cards, pick up the card, and fill it out with your
five-hour commitment to volunteer. 
Pledge Five:
Place the “I’m In” sticker from the pledge card on your
lapel, signifying your pledge, and take the card with you as a reminder to keep
the effort going.  As a thank you, each customer who pledges five hours of
their own time will receive a complimentary tall cup of brewed coffee.

to record pledge hours, find local volunteer opportunities via the HandsOn
Network, track hours pledged-to-date, and receive updates on the

accepting nominations for the recipient of the 8th Annual Spirit of
Hanover Community Service Award.

 This Award is presented annually to an individual who best
exemplifies the spirit of Hanover by voluntarily giving selflessly of their
time, energy and talent to the Town and its citizens thus enriching our lives,
fostering a true sense of community and inspiring us all to a higher level of
service.

 Nominations should be in writing and should articulate in
detail how the nominee satisfies these criteria.

The Walnut Hill Garden Club of
Hanover invites the public to attend a free lecture and slide show regarding
“Invasive Alien Plants of the South Shore” on Tuesday, February
3rd, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m., at the Phoenix Masonic Lodge on Broadway in
Hanover.  As you drive north on Route 3, have you noticed trees covered
and choked by messy looking vines? Are burning bush seedlings popping up in
your back lot unplanted?  During his slide show, Peter Alden will
demonstrate where alien plants come from, how they arrived here, how they
continue to spread, and why we should be concerned about them.  Learn how
to identify invasive plants and how we can limit their spread in wild areas and
our gardens here on the South Shore.

Peter Alden is a world renowned
naturalist, lecturer, ecotourism guide and author of 15 books on North American
and African wildlife, including the National Audubon Society’s Regional Field Guide Series.  A highly
entertaining and widely sought after lecturer on topics that include world
wildlife, the polar regions, invasive plants and biodiversity of the northeast,
he is considered an authority on birds and larger mammals.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The second installment of Hanoverade’s
“socializing with a purpose” was a huge success!  Scores of
Hanover residents arrived at Joe’s American Bar and Grill last night to
meet, greet and help their neighbors in need.  I am pleased to report that
$1,520 in checks and gift cards (and several bags of food!) will be donated to
the Hanover Food Pantry.  I can also personally attest to the fact that a
great time was had by all!   J

Founder Liz Collins’s energy and enthusiasm was
evident throughout the night.  As new members arrived, Liz greeted them
personally and handed everyone a newly minted “Hanoverade”
flyer.  Participants were pleased to see their friends and meet new ones. 
The spirit of community pervaded the room, and no one wanted to leave when it
was over.

As Liz was leaving at the end of the night, and the
donations were being loaded in her car for delivery to the Hanover Food Pantry
in the morning, all I could think was – that will buy a whole lot of
groceries; we’ve done well!  Each month the total receipts from
Hanoverade grows, and each month we help more friends and neighbors in
need.  During these trying economic times, it is comforting to know that
we still reach out to each other here in Hanover.  What a great little
town we live in.
