Write-in campaigns and stickers

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier today issued a statement
regarding write-in campaigns and stickers, “I would like to take this
opportunity to educate Hanover residents about write-in sticker campaigns.
It has been more than five years since we’ve had a sticker campaign in
Hanover, and I thought this information might be helpful.”

Harder-Bernier began, “First and foremost, a voter does not have to use a
sticker to vote for a write in candidate! They can simply handwrite the
name of the candidate and fill in the oval to the right of the written-in
name. If they choose to use a sticker, write-in campaign stickers need to
be applied securely so they don’t jam the machines, and they cannot cover
the black “timing marks” (lines) on the sides of the ballot, or the
ballot may have to be re-voted or hand-counted. Additionally, anyone who
brings a sticker sheet into the polls should be bringing the remainder of
the mailing out of the booths with them; no refuse should be left behind
that could possibly influence another voter. Finally, a candidate of
course will want a sticker applied to the correct office so they get the
votes they need; I will want them applied to the correct office because it
will prolong our counting later that evening if they are applied
incorrectly!”

Any voter wishing to vote for a write-in candidate may do so in any of the
races on the ballot. When the write-in votes are counted at the end of the
night, election workers try to determine the intent of the voter to the
best of their ability and hand-tally the results that follow, but it is
time consuming, so please understand that results may be delayed. The
State Primary Election is Tuesday, September 4th, 2018. The polls are open
at Hanover High School from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. If you have questions
about write-in votes or any other matter related to the election, feel free
to contact Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
Catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or (781) 826-5000 x1079.

Supporting children after a community loss

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This just in from Superintendent of Schools Matt Ferron:

“I am writing to invite you for an evening of support and conversation in
partnership with the Weymouth Public Schools as our communities continue to
heal together.

Please join us on Wednesday, August 22nd for a workshop on “Supporting
Children after a Community Loss”. This event will be hosted by Maureen
Patterson-Fede from the Good Grief Program, and Neena McConnico from the
Child Witness to Violence Project, both from Boston Medical Center. They
will share information on how grief, loss, and difficult events can impact
children and families and provide strategies to help us with the healing
process. The workshop will be held at the John Curtis Free Library in
Hanover from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. This workshop is intended for parents,
caregivers, staff and community members. For more information, please see
the attached flyer. We are very grateful for the other community partners
who continue to reach out offering support and who are involved in the
planning of this workshop.

As we all enjoy the remaining weeks of our summer vacation, please continue
to keep the Chesna family and Weymouth Police Department in your thoughts
and prayers.”

Water in Hanover

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

A friend sent me this link the other day, and I thought I would pass it
along. There have been a lot of questions (and answers) about water in
Hanover, and I thought this segment of the Selectmen’s meeting from a few
weeks ago would be of interest. The discussion about water begins at 1:55.

Hanover Mall/Hanover Crossing update

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hundreds of Hanover and surrounding area residents attended a “Hanover
Crossing Open Forum” Thursday evening, August 9th. The presentation was
filmed by Hanover Community TV and will surely be available on their
website http://hanoverctv.org/ within a matter of days.

In the meantime, the Hanover Mall/Hanover Crossing folks have created a
terrific new website that has links to much of the information that was
presented. Please go to https://thehanovercrossing.com/ for that
information. It will be updated as the project unfolds.

These are important issues for our community, and it was great to see so
many people engaged and interested on a hot summer evening! Nice job,
Hanover!
