Hanover Cultural Council seeks funding proposals

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
HANOVER CULTURAL COUNCIL SEEKS FUNDING PROPOSALS

Proposals for community-oriented arts, humanities, and science programs are
due October 15.
The Hanover Cultural Council has set an October 15 postmark deadline for
organizations, schools and individuals to apply for grants that support
cultural activities in the community.

According to Council spokesperson Karen Cass, these grants can support a
variety of artistic projects and activities in Hanover — including
exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies or
performances in schools, workshops and lectures.

The Hanover Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural
Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC
Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation,
supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and
humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual
appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which
then allocates funds to each community.

This year, the Hanover Cultural Council will distribute about $4,300 in
grants. Previously funded projects include: “The Music Man” play at the
Hanover Middle School, “Beyond the Classroom” Art Exhibit for Teachers on
the South Shore, Theatrical Magic at the John Curtis Free Library, The
Visiting Artist Program at Center/Sylvester Schools, and Diversity Day at
the South Shore Children’s Museum, to name only a few! Of course, the
Annual Hanover Day Celebration is the Cultural Council’s largest
undertaking, and this event allows the Council to fund bigger and better
projects each year which enrich our community.

For specific guidelines and complete information on the Hanover Cultural
Council, contact Karen Cass at (781)982-0080, or karencass@comcast.net. An
application form is attached to this e-mail. Information about the Local
Cultural Council Program is available online at
http://www.mass-culture.org/lcc_public.aspx. Paper application forms are
also available at The John Curtis Free Library.

Energized volunteers needed

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover needs some energized volunteers to help out on two committees: the
Advisory Committee and the Parks and Recreation Committee. The Advisory
Committee reviews all town budgets and is responsible for making
recommendations to the Town Meeting on all Articles. If you are someone
who wants to learn about all parts of the town government and help out with
determining the right budgets, AdComm is great place to dig in. The Parks
and Recreation Committee is responsible for managing all of our recreation
programs and the park land owned by the town. Hanover has a long tradition
of very strong recreation programs and the committee and their employee,
the Recreation Administrator, manage and work to expand recreation
opportunities for citizens of all ages.

If you would like to volunteer or just learn more about these committees,
please contact Town Moderator Doug Thomson at moderator@hanover-ma.gov .

(Editor’s note: As someone who has been a member of both committees, I am
here to tell you that both were very rewarding and invigorating
experiences. AdComm is a great way for a rookie volunteer to get a broad
overview of the whole town, and Parks and Rec is just plain great fun. I
heartily encourage you to throw your hat in the ring! – CHB)

The Hanover PTA is excited to announce that Genevieve’s Fall Fundraiser
will run September 18 – October 2! Hanover Schools will receive up to 50%
profit from your orders!

Hanover PTA sponsors two fundraisers per year to help support parents and

Evelyn), and Genevieve’s Gourmet (cookies, cakes, pies for the holidays).

If you don’t have kids in the schools and/or don’t have access to the
catalogs, please shop on-line at www.genevieves.com, using the school

State Primary unofficial results

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Attached please find the unofficial election results from Tuesday’s State
Primary Election. There are two attachments, one for the Democratic Party
and one for the Republicans.

With a turnout of over 20% of registered voters, I am told we beat the
state average, which is always terrific. I do know we exceeded Secretary
of State Bill Galvin’s prediction of 15 – 20%.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me in the Town Clerk’s Office for more
information at (781) 826-5000 x1079.

Safety and shredding!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

HPD ANNUAL SAFETY PROGRAM and
COMMUNITY SHRED DAY

The Hanover Police Department will be hosting a Child Safety Car Seat
Inspection and Child Identification program on Saturday, September 13th.
Licensed technicians and officers will be on site assisting parents with
the proper installation of their children’s car seats. By participating
in the Child Identification program, parents will receive a CD of their
child’s fingerprints and photograph. The Hanover Police Department would
like to remind parents that their child’s picture and fingerprints should
be updated every few years as the child grows. Both programs will be held
from 8:30 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, at S-Bank, located at 1165
Washington Street in Hanover.

Along with the two Police sponsored programs, S-Bank will be hosting their
Annual Community Shred Day. Watch your important documents professionally
shredded and protect yourself from identity theft.
The shred truck will be on site from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Vote Tuesday!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Many of us are just back from vacation and have barely sent the kids back
to school, so it seems crazy that the State Primary Election is Tuesday,
September 9th, or tomorrow as I write this. Others of us have been firmly
entrenched in the debate for months and are wringing our hands about who
will actually turn out and vote tomorrow. It’s an exciting election, with
lots of great candidates, so check it out. Big decisions will be made –
will you be a part of it?

The beauty of all of this is that thanks to our veterans and forefathers,
the right to vote is a privilege that we all can take advantage of once we
are 18 and registered.

So plan now to vote tomorrow. What does your day look like? When are you
going to fit it in? The polls are open from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. If you
are unenrolled and need to decide which ballot to pull, go to
http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ and click on “View my ballot”. There will also
be specimen ballots available for you to review prior to going in the
voting area.

We all vote at Hanover High School, 287 Cedar Street. See you there!

If you have questions or need more information about the State Primary,
please don’t hesitate to contact me, Cathy Harder-Bernier, Town Clerk, at
catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov or (781) 826-5000 x1079. I’ll be at
the polls all day so come ask your questions in person, or my trusty
Assistant Town Clerk JoAnne O’Connor will be sitting by the phones and
keeping the office humming.
