Recycle your clothes into cash for the schools

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Turn your castoffs into cash for Hanover schools!

When you clean out your closets, bring all your old clothes, shoes and
household linens to the new Bay State Textile containers, now located at
all four Hanover public schools. Bay State Textiles of Pembroke is
partnering with the Hanover Schools to rescue these resources from the
trash, and will pay the schools $100 for every ton of outgrown sweaters,
old painter pants, unwanted stuffed animals, and other household
“soft-wear”.

Sheets, towels, coats, purses, belts, Bay State Textile wants it all: the
good, the bad and the ugly. They only ask that items be dry and reasonably
clean.

Put your unwanted items in plastic bags, so they stay dry during their
journey to a second life as refurbished clothing and household linens,
wiping cloths, insulation, carpet padding, etc.

Hanover pays about $14,000 to dispose of the estimated half million pounds
of textiles discarded by residents each year. That material could bring in
$27,000 in revenue if it’s put in the Bay State Textile containers.
There is also a BST trailer at the transfer station. Revenue from that
container offsets the cost of transfer station operation, saving tax
dollars.

Your old clothes, shoes and household linens are too good for the trash!
Bring them to the schools for a second chance.

Rebecca Stetson 1786 tea program

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The Hanover Historical Society is pleased to announce they will be having
four free historic “foodways” programs for children this summer as part
of the Society’s Year of Hearth and Home. The first program will be held
Wednesday June 25th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Stetson House Museum.

The first program will be the Society’s third annual Rebecca Stetson 1786
Tea. Guests will travel back in time to 1786, and imagine they are invited
by 10-year-old Rebecca Stetson to taste some historic recipes. They will
learn about the culture of tea and trade in the maritime era. Rebecca
Stetson was an actual American girl who grew up in the Stetson House right
after the American Revolution. Guests will learn about the daily life in
Hanover during the Era of the New Republic (1775-1830), and will have the
chance to have the name of a character of a real Hanoverian who lived in
1786! Tea will be held on the grounds (weather permitting) or in their
inside the historic barn.

The event is from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., June 25th. Please call 781-826-9575,
or e-mail Hanoverhistoricalsociety@gmail.com to reserve a spot. Seats are
limited to 30 children per session, so please plan ahead! The program is
free to the public (voluntary donations accepted). The program is paid for
by Eastern Bank and the Education Fund at the Hanover Historical Society.
To check out more about their historic “foodways” programs, or to make
a donation to the Education Fund, please visit
www.hanoverhistoricalsociety.com .

Mitton named Unsung Heroine

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
State Representative Rhonda L. Nyman (D-Hanover) joined her colleagues and
the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women on Thursday, May 29 to
honor Hanover Council on Aging Director Robyn Mitton as an Unsung Heroine.

Mitton, of Brockton, has been the Director of the Hanover Senior Center for
the past 10 years. She led the charge in moving into Hanover’s state of
the art senior center while tripling attendance and adding more wellness
and educational programs to meet the ever changing needs of Hanover’s
seniors.

Representative Nyman nominated Mitton for the award while citing her
ability to not only deal with day to day issues that face seniors, but also
to see the big picture and prepare for future needs.

“Robyn highlights what a Senior Center Director should be,” said
Representative Nyman, “that is, someone who understands and cherishes the
notion that our seniors bring the experience, passion, and ability to
contribute that forms the heart of any community.”

The Unsung Heroines are women who don’t always make the news, but truly
make a difference. They are the women who use their time, talent and
enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others and make a difference in their
neighborhoods, cities and towns. They are mentors, volunteers and
innovators who do what needs to be done without expectations of recognition
or gratitude. These women are the glue that keeps a community together and
every community has them.

For more information, please contact Nyman’s Legislative Aide Francis
DiBona at francis.dibona@mahouse.gov .
