Dear fellow Hanoverians:
As you may have noticed, the cannons in the center of Town next to the
Congregational Church and across from the Town Hall and Library have
been restored. A thoughtful Hanover teacher and long-time resident
asked me not too long ago about the restoration – wondering who did it
and what the process was; noting also that they looked awesome! So, I
did a little digging and Rick Rockwell, Collections Committee co-chair
of the Hanover Historical Society, kindly sent along the following
detail for me to share with all of you:
“This was a lengthy project for us. A few years back, our committee
came up with the idea of restoring the cannons. While they are not
owned by us, we thought it would simply a great thing to do for the
town and the cannons themselves. Per our understanding, the cannons
were surplus inventory from the United States Navy and have been on
our small Town green as long as anyone can remember.
The cannons are 12 pound Dahlgren Boat Howitzers and were manufactured
in 1863. Our first step was getting a Community Preservation Grant
from the Town of Hanover, which Town Meeting approved. We then put the
process out to bid in order to obtain someone to take on the
restoration. We were lucky enough to get a bid from the Steen Cannon
and Ordnance Works Company located in Ashland, Kentucky. This company
came with great support from the Scituate Historical Society (who had
a cannon restored by the company) and from a private cannon collector
in Essex, Massachusetts who had also worked with Steen Cannon.

After selecting Steen Cannon for this project, in June of 2012, Steen
drove from Kentucky and took the cannons back to their home state.
Back in their workshop is where all of the restoration took place. The
company removed all the layers of rust and corrosion from the carriage
portion of the cannons and painted them black. The bronze cannon bores
themselves had all of the corrosion removed and they are now shiny and
new looking. While they will oxidize with time, this bronze cleaning
was necessary during this process.

Lastly, once the carriage portions and the cannons themselves were
restored, Steen Cannon cast a pattern and made four historically
accurate wheels (as the original wooden wheels had long since
deteriorated in our harsh New England weather). The new wheels were
made out of aluminum; they are made to look like the wooden wheels
that were originally part of the carriage portion of the cannons. The
wheels were painted in a grey color using a powder coating technique.
This paint basically baked onto the carriages and should last for
countless years, if not indefinitely. Once the restoration and wheel
replicas were complete, the cannons were brought back to Hanover in
November of 2012.

Thanks go out the numerous people in Hanover who gave us advice and
drive to take on the project, to the Town of Hanover DPW, the
Community Preservation Committee, the Town Selectmen and the
Historical Commission for supporting us and allowing us to take on
this project. All in all, this project involved countless support from
groups and people within our town. The end result is two beautifully
restored cannons, which are a beacon of history for our small town
common.”

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Please donate now to the Library Annual Book and Bake Sale hosted by
the Friends of the John Curtis Free Library! Donations will be
gratefully accepted from April 29– May 17. (The sale will be held
May 18th.)
This is the biggest fundraiser for the Friends, and we rely on the
town to donate any and all books, CDs, tapes, DVDs, videos, and
puzzles in good condition. Please do some spring cleaning now for the
library and help fund extra programs, book acquisitions, and
museum/cultural passes for all.
Do you enjoy reading the latest novels or are you a Barnes and Noble
regular? Do you belong to a book group? Do you have a stash of former
bestsellers that are just gathering dust on your shelves? The Friends
are also in need of some of the more popular and recent bestsellers.
Thanks for considering these special donations that will enhance our
once-a-year sale.
There will be special sale pricing at the Book Sale this year; stay
tuned to “Around Town on the Web” for more details!
All donations may be dropped off at the library during regular library
hours. The library will continue to accept donations until Friday, May
18 (no magazines or textbooks please). Please be advised that the
public book sale room will be closed beginning April 29 (today as I
write this) so that the Friends may organize for the sale.

The Friends are also looking for people who can help with the bake
sale at this event. If you are interested in baking, please sign the
list at either the adult or the children circulation desks or contact

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Attention dog owners! According to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter
140, Section 137, dogs over the age of 6 months in Hanover need to be
licensed. In the Town of Hanover, licenses are issued by the Town
Clerk. Additionally, in order to receive a license, the dog must be
vaccinated against rabies (see Section 145B for more information about
this requirement).
The last day to license your dog in Hanover is this Tuesday, April
30th. The Clerk’s Office will be open Monday and Tuesday from 8:00
a.m. – noon and again from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The cost to license your dog is $5.00 if spayed/neutered, and $10.00
if not. Cash and checks (only) are acceptable forms of payment. The
Clerk’s Office is located on the basement level of Town Hall.
A late fee of $25 will apply beginning this Wednesday, May 1st.
Don’t delay! License your dog Monday or Tuesday of this week!

*Music and Movement program at Library*
Jennifer Stratton, a musician and expressive arts educator, will
present a program for children at the John Curtis Library on Saturday,
May 4th at 11:00 a.m. Children will sing, dance, play instruments,
play games and more. All ages are welcome.
Jennifer has performed at the library numerous times in recent years
and is always well received by audiences. Parents may register their

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Regular readers of “Around Town on the Web” will remember Ryan
Shea (and his twin brother Matt), Hanover High graduate, Boston
University soccer star, and Champion Soccer Camp founder. Ryan
continues to work with the Parks and Recreation Department on that
latter contribution to our town’s children.
Ryan wrote to me earlier this week to see if we could motivate Hanover
residents to donate to the Boston Marathon bombing victims. Ryan,
without a day’s training, went out and ran 26.2 miles in honor of
those who ran the Boston Marathon but could not finish due to the
tragic events of that day. He videotaped his run (which took place on
treadmills at Healthtrax right here in Hanover!), and the clip may be

. I am happy to shout Ryan’s accomplishment from the rooftops of
Hanover!

Committee recommendations, and the Town of Hanover Annual Report for
the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, are now available at Town Hall.
