Author to speak in Hanover

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Newcomer’s Book Group is very pleased to be hosting a
free discussion with Lindsay Frucci, author of /The Pig and Me/, and
founder of No Pudge! Foods.

*Please join them on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the
Furniture Consignment Gallery, 756 Washington Street in Hanover.*

/Lindsay Frucci describes herself as a “stay-at-home” mom with two
small boys, in a situation where she needed to make money, and didn’t
want to sacrifice her family. Sound familiar? You can check out her
blog at: http://lindsayfrucci.com/Blog.html
/.

The Pig and Me: A Memoir When a personal bankruptcy robbed her family
of financial security; Lindsay Frucci decided the way back to marital
and family bliss was to start a business that would make gobs of
money. Out of the mantra “there must be something I can do” and a
passion for fat-laden, fudgy brownies that made it hard to zip her
jeans, an idea was born: healthy brownies for the masses. In a leap of
faith borne on the wings of innocence and naiveté, she founded No
Pudge! Foods, Inc., and began an epic journey of unexpected personal
growth and discovery. Frucci owned No Pudge! for ten years, and when
she sold it, her Fat Free Fudge Brownie Mixes were sold in every major
grocery chain in the United States. The fairy tale is an enviable,
business success story. The reality is the story of a woman who was
raised hearing “you can’t” and found, to her surprise and great
satisfaction, she could – and then some.

/Lindsay Frucci founded No Pudge! Foods in 1995 and served as Chief
Cook and Bottle Washer for ten years. She, her husband and their
pound-puppy Zoe, happily divide their time between Wolfeboro, New
Hampshire and Brooklyn, New York. This is her first book./

All are welcome, so bring a friend and join Newcomers for this special
event! Please bring a drink to share, snacks will be provided. If you
are interested in attending, please RSVP to Diana at the Furniture
Consignment Gallery at (781) 826-5114 or dfrucci@aol.com

“What are we eating?” with the Y

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The South Shore YMCA in Hanover, the South Shore Natural Science
Center and Sustainable Hanover are collaborating to empower and
educate healthy eating, sustainability, community connection and
environmental responsibility through a thought-provoking film series
called /What ARE We Eating??? /

“Our collaborative effort began with an idea to build a garden in
2009” says Kim Engle, Arts and Education Director at the South Shore
YMCA; “we collaborated with Sustainable Hanover and found ourselves
with a portable greenhouse, a successful sustainability fundraising
event and the realization that we need to do more education.”
Sustainable Hanover and the South Shore YMCA continued their joint
efforts with a few small film events, kids’ events and teen events.
In September of 2011, the Y began its official partnership with the
South Shore Natural Science Center and the film series was realized.

This month’s film will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the South Shore
Natural Science Center on:

/February 16, 2012/
*/FRESH/**–*celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people
across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has
witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an
industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination,
environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid
obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a
practical vision for a future of our food and our planet. “Where
FRESH departs from Food Inc., The Omnivore’s Dilemma, and most other
food documentaries of late, is that FRESH is downright hopeful.” –
FairFoodFight.com

Stay tuned to ATOTW for details regarding the film in March! For more
information about any of these programs, please contact Kim Engle at

Joan Norris and The Last Resort

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
If you have not ever met Hanover resident Joan Norris, you should. I
had the good fortune to meet Joan a few years ago thanks to “Around
Town on the Web” and a mutual love for the sport of baseball. One
conversation led to another, and I soon found myself enraptured by her
obvious talents, her devotion to our town, and her love for animals,
too.
Today, please join me in celebrating the auspicious occasion of Joan
Norris’ 11,000th cat rescue. It is a staggering number that defies
my comprehension but it somehow seems to be all in the course of a
day’s work for Joan. Joan founded The Last Resort cat rescue shelter
over 30 years ago and has inspired legions of fellow rescuers, donors,
adopters, and cat lovers.
“Our” Joan is delightfully featured in a Patriot Ledger article
today that may be found here:
http://www.patriotledger.com/blogs/goodage/x1393362748/Joan-Norris-has-rescued-cats-for-30-years

After you have read the article, I hope you will take a moment to go
through your closets, attics and basement and dig out any clean but no
longer used worn blankets and quilts. Joan has quietly requested the
assistance of Hanover “Around Town on the Web” readers for this
kindness for the kittens and cats who will appreciate them.
Go meet “Our” Joan. Bring her some old blankets for the kittens.
And congratulate her on her first 30 years of rescuing cats while you
are there. She is an icon in our town and I for one am thrilled to
know her. She may be reached at jnorrisink@verizon.net

or (781) 826-9560.
