December PAC seminar

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Special Education Parent Advisory Council is pleased to
announce their next educational seminar. All events are free and open
to the public, with no reservations required. Please join them!

*Transition 101: from High School to Adulthood, *with Marilyn Weber of
the Federation for Children with Special Needs/.

/
*Tuesday, December 6, 2011, Hanover High School, 287 Cedar Street,
first floor, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.*

This workshop will focus on the needs of students who are not expected
to pass the MCAS and graduate at the traditional age of 18. We will
discuss the effective use of the IEP and the Massachusetts Transition
Planning Form for students who are ages 14 – 22. It has been shown
that individualized, person centered planning of curriculum and
supports throughout high school leads to better post high school
outcomes and opportunities in education, training, and/or employment
for students with disabilities. Discussion will include the age of
majority, self determination and self advocacy, life skill development
and preparing students to pursue as independent an adult life as
possible.

*What is the Hanover Parent Advisory Council?*
The *PAC* is a parent group whose mission is to work toward
understanding, respect, support and appropriate education for all
children with learning differences in our community. The *Hanover PAC*
will provide an opportunity for parents to network and share
information as well as a way to work constructively with our schools
to make them the best they can be for all children.
Check out our web site www.hanovermasspac.webs.com

handy for many occasions but the luminaries are often seen in
neighborhoods throughout Hanover on Christmas Eve. Please help light
up our town on this special night!

Stay safe from the Hanover Woman’s Club, Jrs.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The Hanover Woman’s Club, Jrs. wants everyone in Hanover to stay
safe and have therefore offered the following suggestions:
· When out walking, jogging, riding a bike, pushing a baby carriage,
cutting through a parking lot, etc., you are not always visible to
drivers. Put reflectors on the front and back wheels of bikes and the
back of the seat where car lights will pick up the reflectors. Try
putting them on the wheels of baby carriages.

· When you are out and about wear white, yellow or tan scarves,
gloves, mittens or hats. These colors stand out during the day and at
night. They are especially needed in parking lots.

· Runners, joggers and walkers should wear reflectors that can be
placed on the arms or legs which are visible to auto head lights.
These can be purchased at bike or athletic shops for around $6.00.
This includes people who walk dogs early in the morning and at night
when it is dark.

· House numbers should be placed on your house and on your mail box.
A lot of mail boxes in Hanover are on one side of the street only. In
an emergency, police and fire departments can find your house faster
if they see your numbers.

· Use BLOCK NUMBERS on your house and mail boxes. Save the fancy
numbers for your mailing labels. It is much easier to read block
numbers during the night and during bad weather.

· When outside your home always carry identification and a list of
medications you are taking.

· Make up a list of all medications you take each day, both
prescription and over the counter drugs. Make three copies of this
form. Place each copy in a separate envelope marked “medication”
and the name of the person taking the medication. Put one envelope on
your refrigerator, one in your wallet and one in the glove compartment
of your car. Should anything happen to you, emergency personnel will
know right away if you are allergic to medication, what medication you
are taking, and the dosage of the medication. When you go to your
health care provider, they always update your medications; ask them if
they will provide you with a Xerox copy for this purpose. Ask them for
3 copies!!!

· Keep your doors and windows locked at home, in the garage and in
your car.

· MAKE children wear bike helmets while riding bikes, skate boards,
etc.

· MAKE everyone buckle up in the car. For some strange reason when
the children of a Hanover Woman’s Club, Jrs. member were young and
she caught them in her rear mirror taking their seatbelts off, her car
always went over to the curb and shut down! When the kids realized
that the car wasn’t moving and she suggested they recheck their
seatbelts to make sure they were fastened, and once they were,
magically, the car started right up. Maybe your car does the same
thing!!

· Test the lights on your car. Do the directionals work in the front
as well as the back? Do your high beams work properly; are all the
lights working properly in front as well as the back? You are the
driver of the auto; make sure everything works properly to keep the
people inside your car safe as well as the people outside your car.

REMEMBER, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO CAN KEEP YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE.
