Ski and Snowboard lessons

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Parks and Recreation is offering Ski/Snowboard Lessons at Blue
Hills!

Once again this winter Parks and Rec will be offering ski and
snowboard lessons at Blue Hills! Children aged 2nd – 8th grade are
eligible. Buses will leave the Rec Center at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday
afternoons. 90 minute lessons will begin at 4:00 p.m. and buses will
depart from Blue Hills at 5:45 p.m., arriving back at the Rec Center
at 6:30 (due to traffic, return time may vary by a few minutes).
Children may choose to bring or rent equipment. Helmets are not
required, however they are STRONGLY encouraged. Classes will take
place for 5 Tuesdays starting January 10th. Hanover will be sharing a
bus with Abington and Rockland again and Randolph as well this year!
Every participant will be given a Blue Flex Pass to be worn during
lessons or open ski, which is their pass to ski or snowboard. After
the lessons are done, your child keeps this pass and you can add day
passes to their pass to go to Blue Hills again. All participants will
wear a fabric vest to clearly define them as part of our group.

Parks and Rec is also offering Open Ski for experienced children who
do not need direct supervision on the slopes.

*All registrations must be in by December 20th; any registrations made
between the dates of Dec. 21st to Jan 2nd will have an additional $10
added on. Blue Hills will not accept additional registrations after
Jan 2nd.*

This is a GREAT holiday present for the kids!

*Ages:* 2nd – 8th grade
* *
*Time:* Bus leaves Rec Center at 3:00 p.m. returning at 6:30 p.m.

Post-Thanksgiving Open Space walk

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

This just in from the Open Space Committee!

Come explore Hanover’s newest open space: November 25th, 11:00 a.m.
Need a way to burn off some turkey and pie? Avoiding Black Friday
crowds? Please join Hanover’s Open Space Committee (OSC) on Friday,
November 25th at 11:00 a.m. while we ramble over and around the 26
acres that we voted to acquire at 2011 Town Meeting. Located off of
Circuit Street, this lovely parcel was formerly managed as a tree
farm, and offers a variety of terrains for everyone to enjoy.

The OSC members will offer guided walks around the pond, through the
existing wide dirt paths, on established trails, and for the more
daring, venture further into the canopy for the site of future trails
on the site. The property is located on the south side of Circuit
Street between Hillside Drive and Winslow Street. There is limited
parking on the front of the property, on Circuit Street. Be sure to
bring your thinking caps, as the committee wants your ideas for a
permanent name for the parcel.

To hear more about walks and other opportunities, follow us on
Facebook: HanoverOpenSpace, hanoveropenspace@yahoogroups.com

, or e-mail us at hanoveropenspace@gmail.com

.

Reminder: the Hanover Open Space Committee is on the lookout for
individuals and groups from our community that want to take an active
role in our trails and open spaces. In conjunction with our existing
trail walks, we will host a series of volunteer events in the coming
year. We are happy to tailor events for a group, or provide
opportunities for folks that have a particular interest.

Volunteer Positions can vary from reporting on trail conditions,
monitoring wildlife, offering to give a tour on your favorite trail:

A few opportunities we can currently offer:
· Trail Maintenance and Monitoring. Keep us up to date on your local
trails’ conditions and use.
· Help install improved trail signage and marking at locations
throughout town.
· Historical research of open spaces throughout town
· Bird nest box monitoring at Nava Field on Center Street.
· Vernal pool certifications. With little more than a clipboard and a
camera you can help us officially certify some of the potential vernal
pools in town.
· Other ideas, let us know!

Of course for some volunteer opportunities, there are specific skill
sets that would be important for a prospective volunteer to possess.
But today the most important qualities are curiosity, willingness to
take responsibility, and a willingness to learn about these wonderful
properties and all they contain.

Come join us, and be a part of promoting Hanover’s best assets to
our community. Please send your full name, address, telephone and/or
e-mail to hanoveropenspace@gmail.com

or contact our co-chairs:

Submit it and forget it

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Are you or your non-profit organization thinking about submitting an
article or notice to “Around Town on the Web” (ATOTW)? If so, I am
therefore writing to let you know about one of my favorite new
features about the new software we are using here on ATOTW.
Begin by writing your notice as you would usually, following the
submission guidelines found at www.atotw.com
. But now, instead of sending me something randomly and wondering
when the notice will go out, you can request a send date…days or
even weeks in advance…and forget about it! I can queue up your
notice on my day off, and it can go out to the ATOTW distribution list
days or weeks later, while we both are at work or even while Hanover
sleeps! This new feature is ideal for busy volunteers (and yours
truly!).
I find that ATOTW readers tend to use ATOTW e-mails as reminders of
something they may have read in the Mariner, or seen advertised on a
flyer. As a result, I generally recommend that your requested “send
date” be less than a week before your event. But, that is entirely
up to you. I will try and meet your requests as they come in, and as
always, please try to give at least 72 hours notice before an event.
I look forward to continuing to help make connections and serve the
community of Hanover. Together we make this town great!

Thanksgiving weekend blood drives

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
* *
*Hanover Mall Thanksgiving Weekend Blood Drives*

SATURDAY, November 26th
8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Rear of mall, Entrance D

SUNDAY, November 27th
11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Rear of mall, Entrance D

Due to hectic holiday schedules, busy travel plans and inclement
weather in the Northeast, blood donations can decline during this time
of year. By adding a blood donation to your Thanksgiving traditions, a
blood shortage can be averted. For those in good health, taking just
one hour out of a busy holiday schedule to give blood is an active way
of showing thanks.

For more information about Red Cross blood drives, contact Barbara Ann
Joyce at joyceb@usa.redcross.org
. To schedule an appointment, call 800-Red Cross (733-2767) or go to

Zumba in Hanover!

* *

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Zumba!

Hanover Parks and Recreation is offering Zumba at the Boys Club with
Instructor Jen Lloyd!

So you’ve heard the buzz:
Zumba is the newest, hottest, cardio workout that combines dance and
fitness.
It is so much fun that you are actually disappointed rather than
relieved when the hour ends.
In Zumba, participants explore many rhythms such as Cha-cha, Salsa,
Samba, Reggaeton, Bhangra,
Belly Dance, Merengue, Country, Hip Hop and more. You do not need to
have any dance background
or experience to participate; even those who consider themselves
hopelessly uncoordinated are
loving it and seeing results. Zumba Basic is the same as a regular
Zumba class, but it is
stripped down to a slightly simpler, lower-impact format: less
jumping, less turning, same
sexy hip movements, same calorie-burning fun!

Instructor: Jen Lloyd
When: Tuesdays, November 15th – January 10th (skipping December
vacation)
*Time:* 5:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.
Where: Hanover Boys Club (550 Hanover Street)
Cost: $70 for session (or $10 to drop in anytime)
Registration: www.hanoverparkandrec.com

or bring a check payable to Hanover Parks and Recreation.
E-mail Lauren at recreation@hanoverdpw.org

with any questions.
