The Hanover Department of Public Works has purchased a limited number of recycle bins and is making these bins available free of charge to Hanover residents on a first come first serve basis at the Hanover Transfer Station. This is a trial program to encourage recycling. As the number of bins is limited, the Department is limiting the distribution of bins to one bin per family per week. The Hanover Transfer Station processes 7,700 tons of solid waste annually, including 1,100 tons of recycled paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and cans and an additional 600-800 tons of metals and other recyclables. The DPW hopes to reduce solid waste expenses by increasing the amount of recyclables which are diverted from the waste stream. Recyclables are a net revenue generator for the Town. Residents are encouraged to participate in the Town of Hanover’s recycling program to help control the ever increasing cost of solid waste as well as to reduce the demands on the environment. I’ve been picking up my bins over the last couple of weeks and am delighted to see my kids run out to the garage with their recyclables far more than they used to. Not only that, but the forest green bins look great, too! Kudos to the good folks at the DPW for making them available to us.

One of the most important of holiday traditions in Hanover is the Stetson House Greens Sale held every year in conjunction with the Open House at the Stetson House held on or around the first weekend in December. The Stetson House is a much beloved and important historical landmark in our town. This year’s Greens Sale and Open House will be held on December 6th and 7th. More on that later, but mark your calendar in the meantime!
The Greens Sale is a fundraiser to benefit the Friends of the Stetson House. Recent past fundraisers have helped to pay for repairs to the chimney, the painting of the fence and trim on the barn, and updating of the electrical system in the barn. John Goldthwait and George Lewald before him have led the efforts to create beautiful wreaths, topiaries and kissing balls at annual greens workshops that are put up for sale just in time for the holidays and to support the Friends of the Stetson House.
It takes many hands and contributions to produce the gorgeous greens. Please consider cutting and delivering cedar, yew, boxwood, arborvitae, juniper, holly and/or spruce sprigs to outside the Barn at the Stetson House this week or next. Then, please also consider participating in a workshop to make the finished products:
• Monday, November 24th, 9:30 a.m., Hal Thomas’ barn at 854 Broadway
• Saturday, November 29th, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., Stetson House Barn
No experience is necessary. Please bring your hand clippers and wear gloves. Make plans now to do your part to contribute to our Stetson House!

A dear friend of mine is (one of?) the coordinator/s of the following church fair every year, and so I can vouch for the fact that it is an enormous undertaking. They do a great job; don’t miss it!
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 17 Church Street in Hanover, is holding its annual Holiday Fair on Saturday, December 6, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, in their Parish Hall. There will be a holiday café selling beverages, donuts, bagels, chowder, chili, and sandwiches. Other offerings are Christmas decorations, a Collectibles Corner, costume jewelry, children’s books and toys, beautiful handmade crafts, gift baskets, and wonderful baked goods, featuring a “fill your tin” cookies sale. As an added attraction, a special guest will be available for holiday photographs. On Saturday, November 22nd, Beverly Moore will be speaking at the Parish Hall of the First Congregational Church of Hanover, UCC. Beverly Moore is author of the book, “Matters of the Heart and Mind”. She is also a coach with StilMee. StilMee is a leader in Alzheimer coaching and provides in-home coaching for family caregivers, educational programs, training, public presentations and assisted living residence support. Beverly will talk about care from the heart and mind for people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or senility, and related care for their caregivers. The program presentation begins at 10:00 a.m. The Indoor Labyrinth will be open from 9:00 a.m. until noon in the Parish Hall for meditation and reflection. Refreshments will be served. Sorry to say the Hanover High School boys’ soccer season came to end last night against Pembroke at Veterans Stadium in Quincy. The final score was 0-1. Both teams had very few scoring chances in the 1st half, with no scoring taking place during the 1st 40 minutes. 15 minutes into the 2nd half, Pembroke scored with a cross and a finish at the top of the box. Hanover kept the pressure on the rest of the game with multiple chances – even 2 extremely close finishes within the last minute of play. Tough way to end a great season for these guys.
One last round of thanks to Geoff Hoffman, ace reporter, for these soccer updates. And in the meantime, good luck Hanover football in this weekend’s Patriot Bowl!

My on-the-scene reporter (I have reporters now?!) Geoff Hoffman recently sent along the latest news regarding the Hanover High School varsity soccer teams (thanks, Geoff!):
Unfortunately, the girls’ season ended with a 1-2 loss to Oliver Ames on Tuesday. They went ahead 1-0 and it was 1-1 at half, but OA scored the only goal in the 2nd half to take the game. Tough loss – but the girls had a great season in a very competitive Patriot League.
The boys’ team will continue on in the MIAA tournament with a 3-0 home win vs. Norton. Brian Powers scored to make it 2-0 with approximately 7 minutes left in the 1st half with a great move around a Norton defender. With 4 minutes left in the half, the lights went out and after an hour’s delay play continued. Less than 10 minutes into the 2nd half, Brian Powers scored again, taking a feed from Colin Shea and going to the far post for a pretty goal. James Oliver’s goalkeeping was also solid making multiple saves. The Hanover boys’ soccer team plays next at Quincy’s Veterans Stadium tomorrow, Thursday, 11/13 at 7:00 p.m. vs. Pembroke. From the very founding year of our town, the residents of Hanover have assembled after the harvest is safely gathered in to give thanks. That time of worship spoke for the faith of every member of our community. As our town has grown, so has the variety of expressions of faith. But every faith tradition holds the giving of thanks as a sacred and joyful obligation. This year our town will gather again to offer thanks, but our service will be offered as a reflection of the different faiths of the people who call our town home. Leaders of various faith traditions will gather as neighbors and friends. Everyone in our community is asked to join us in this ancient community tradition at our town’s Interfaith Service of Thanksgiving. It will be held at 7:30 pm on Monday, November 24th at St. Mary’s Church on Route 139. Folks who would like to lend their voices to a community choir can come at 6:00 p.m. that night for a rehearsal. South Shore Recycling Cooperative to host 10th Anniversary “Shredabration”
To celebrate ten years of service to its member towns, the South Shore Recycling Cooperative (SSRC) is hosting a “Shredabration”, in conjunction with Sustainable Hanover. The event will take place on Saturday, November 22 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Hanover Town Hall and is open to all area residents and small businesses.
Northeast Data Destruction of Mansfield will provide on-site shredding and recycling services. Residents and small businesses may bring sensitive documents to be shredded on site. Northeast Data Destruction will shred the first box of documents each participant brings at no charge. There is a $5 charge for each additional box.
Sustainable Hanover is collecting used CDs, DVDs, video games, VHS and audio tapes for reuse/recycling. The items will be sorted and sent to Got Books for reuse, or to the CD Recycling Center of America for recycling.
The SSRC will accept and deliver donations of gently used baby equipment in good, clean and usable condition for Cradles to Crayons, which distributes a wide range of children’s items to local families in need. (No battery-operated items please.)
Established in 1998, the SSRC assists sixteen member towns, from Weymouth down the coast to Plymouth, and west to Holbrook with waste reduction, recycling, composting and hazardous product management.
Did you know that paper products, including cardboard, make up approximately 31% of household solid waste. Shredded paper is one of many types of paper that is easily recyclable. Technology has made it possible for paper recyclers to handle some common non-paper contaminants. Among the types of paper now acceptable in public recycling programs are:
