On Saturday, November 5th from 2:45 p.m. – 4:10 p.m., Hanover Youth
Hockey’s second annual Try Hockey for Free Day will take place at
Hobomock Arena in Pembroke. Fun for all; children interested in
learning more about hockey are encouraged to attend. The first 40 to
sign in will receive a “gift bag” from USA Hockey, and there will be
special guests joining throughout the session. Like last year, the
goals will be having fun and helping children learn more about skating
and hockey. Skates and helmets are required and there is no cost for
the event. There was a huge turn-out last year; please arrive on time
to sign in. There will be a very limited supply of skates and helmets
to be lent for the event. Please register at TryHockeyForFree.com

In addition, Hanover Youth Hockey (HYH) has some very exciting news.
The Hanover Youth Hockey Instructional and Mite Programs continue to
see unprecedented growth! Due to this growth and HYH’s work with USA
Hockey, there are 15 bags of equipment (everything but skates) that
are available to lend. This equipment will go to the next 15
new-to-Hanover-hockey players that require equipment. It is yours for
the year as long as it fits. If you are interested in learning more

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) Virus Confirmed in Mosquitoes from
Hanover

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announced today
that EEE virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Hanover,
Massachusetts. Hanover has had one EEE virus positive mosquito sample
taken on October 20, 2011 and identified on October 24, 2011.

*While the Hanover Board of Health continues to work closely with the
MDPH, the Board of Health on October 24, 2011 has closed all
recreational fields & school property for outdoor activities from six
(6) pm to seven (7) am. This will remain in effect until such time
that Hanover experiences a “killing frost” (temperatures at or
below 32 degrees).*
EEE is a rare but serious illness spread by the bite of an infected
mosquito. While EEE can infect people of all ages, people under 15
years of age or over 50 years of age are at greatest risk for serious
illness.

*By taking a few, common-sense precautions, people can help to protect
themselves and their loved ones*:

* Avoid Mosquito Bites*
· *Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours* – The hours from dusk to dawn are
peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor
activities that occur during evening or early morning. Otherwise, take
extra care to use repellent and protective clothing.
· *Clothing Can Help* reduce mosquito bites. Although it may be
difficult to do when it’s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and
socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
· *Apply Insect Repellent* when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with
*DEET* (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), *permethrin, picaridin* (KBR 3023),
*IR3535* or *oil of lemon eucalyptus* [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)]
according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products
should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be
used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon
eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.
Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing,
shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.) is coordinating, with the
Hanover Board of Health and the Hanover Police Department, a
nationwide one-day event to take back unwanted medications on
*Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Hanover Senior Center, 665 Center
Street, Hanover, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.*

This national initiative will provide an opportunity for the public to
surrender pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications
to law enforcement officers for destruction. Expired, unused or
unwanted substances in our homes are a potential source of supply for
the increasing abuse of pharmaceutical drugs in the United States and
an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.

Porzio, who so graciously created “Friends of Julie” with her
husband Mark. Friends of Julie is a Hanover-based non-profit
organization that raises funds for parents with late-stage cancer and
their families. The Fund gives directly to the patient so they can
participate in memory making experiences and spend quality time with
their family. Experiences include day trips, vacations, cruises and

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
On Thursday, October 27, the John Curtis Library will host two
Halloween parties for children.

At 11:00 a.m., there will be a party for younger children (1-3 years)
with stories, songs, games and a costume parade. At 3:30 p.m. there
will be a party for older children (4 and up) with entertainment,
games and slightly spooky activities.

Both parties are drop-in and free of charge; no advance tickets
required. Funding is provided by the Friends of the John Curtis
Library.
